Helen Daves Dowdle, 88, of Franklin, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2005.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ann Phillips Daves. She was married to the late Woodrow Dowdle, who died in 1979.

She was a member of Wells Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by two children, Brenda Corbin of Buford, Ga., and Gene Dowdle and wife Juanita of Duluth, Ga.; one sister, Josephine Baird of Franklin; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m., at Wells Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Jonathan Wolf and Rev. Lester Evans will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jackie Baird, Lewis Ashe, Christopher Dills, Jim Ashe, Tony Ashe and Dennis McNab.

Edna Keener Ray, 83, of the Clarks Chapel Community, died Friday, July 3, 2009, in an Asheville hospital.

She was a native of Gaston County, N.C., and the daughter of the late Elbert and Estella Hoyle Keener. She was married to the late R.C. Ray. She was a retired nurse's aide. She worked at Angel Medical Center for 20 years and later for Dr. Doralea Harmon for 15 years. She enjoyed helping others and was an avid NASCAR fan. She was a lifetime member of the Franklin VFW Ladies Auxiliary for more than 50 years. She was a member of Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Meritha J. Purifoy and husband David of New Bern; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Joe Dowdle.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday July 7, in the Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tim Hayes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers. Wendell Ray Angel, 80, of Franklin, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Wendell Oliver Ray and Alice Sutton Ray. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Lex B. "JR" Angel; two brothers, R.C. Ray and Otis Ray; and two sisters, Monta Hurst and Isabelle Vanhook. Wendell worked at Cullasaja Elementary School for 30 years as lunch room manager. She was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie Ridley of Sylva; two sons, Jack Angel of Asheville and Steve Angel of Franklin; two sisters, Evelyn Brendle and Eunice Doster; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 25, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Ernie Sanders officiated. Burial was in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. He was a lifelong member of Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church; was instrumental in the church renovations, pews, carpet and stained glass windows; a lay leader and Sunday school teacher. Oliatta Virginia Potts Angel, 86, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Potts and Virgie Bryant Potts. She was married for 67 years to the late Elbert E. Angel, who died Dec. 12, 2002. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Higdon and a son-in-law, Larry Ranta.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the W.M.U. Oliatta and her husband owned and operated Angel Monuments.

She is survived by three children, Nancy Russell and husband Sutton of Franklin, Alice Owens and husband Harry of Boone Grove, Ind., and Elbert "Bud" Angel Jr. of Nantahala; two brothers, Jerry Potts of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Larry Potts of Watkinsville, Ga.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight great-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Tom Grubb officiated.

Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronnie Ranta, Chuck Tallent, Gabe Hofrichter, Jordan Tallent, Toby Blanton, Bill Vitatoe, Josh Blanton and Lyman Bryant.

The family received friends Wednesday, from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Children's Home, C/O Lewis Smith, 1256 Shope Rd., Otto, NC 28763.

Helen Daves Dowdle, 88, of Franklin, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2005.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ann Phillips Daves. She was married to the late Woodrow Dowdle, who died in 1979.

She was a member of Wells Grove Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, at 3 p.m., at Wells Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Jonathan Wolf and Rev. Lester Evans will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jackie Baird, Lewis Ashe, Christopher Dills, Jim Ashe, Tony Ashe and Dennis McNab.

Levi Jefferson Ray (1847-1899). Levi was born and died in Macon County, North Carolina. Levi had Tuberculosis. He was a miner and farmer. Tuberculosis might not be the best thing for a miner to have.

He married Harriet Adeline "Addie" Fouts, 26 December 1877. He was 30, and she was 22. Addie was the daughter of James and Rebecca Barnes Fouts.

About seven years after Levi died, 18 October 1906, Addie married William Thomas Drinnon, son of William and Maryanne Welch Drinnon. Addie was known to be a very no-nonsense type of woman, so the children were raised with a stern hand.

Robert Woodrow Wild

Robert Woodrow Wild, 87, of Mansfiled, Ga., passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at The Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello, Ga.

He was a native of Franklin and moved to Jasper County in 1944. His parents were the late Judson A. Wild and Lela Ray Wild. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Josh Wild; and two brothers, James B. Wild and Frank M. Wild.

He was a member of Oak Dale Baptist Church in Franklin. Before retirement, he owned and operated a sawmill and farmed.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Roper Wild of Mansfield, Ga.; children, Linda and Billy Piper of Mansfield, Ga., Martha and Rusty Duke of Nashville, Tenn., Danny and Helen Wild, Larry and Joy Wild and Tony and Janell Wild, all of Monticello, Ga.; grandchildren, Tracy Duke, Shannon Jones, Shawn Piper, Garrett Wild, Ashley Wild and Courtney Wild; great-grandchildren, Brittni Jones, Jonathan Jones, Blake Jones, Chase Duke, Hope Duke and Candice Watts; and a sister, Pauline Sanders of Flat Rock, N.C.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Jordan Funeral Home in Monticello, Ga.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Chapel of Jordan Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Roper officiated. Burial was in West View Cemetery in Monticello, Ga.

Pallbearers were Garrett Wild, Tracy Duke, Chase Duke, Dane Jones, Mark Harrison, Edwin Allen and Kyle Allen.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to The Retreat Nursing Home, 898 College St., Monticello, GA 31064.

Jordan Funeral Home of Monticello, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

2-Launa Naomi "Una" Ray [6966]³ was born on 22 Sep 1896 in Franklin, Macon Co, NC, died on 6 Jun 1984 at age 87, and was buried in Idewilde Cemetery, Hood River, OR.

General Notes: It was against her mother's wishes that John and Una ran off and married. Una was only about 13 and John was 18, although their marriage license states they were older, because they had lied about their ages. The story how all this came about was related to their daughter, Clydell, who write it down. They left at night, in pouring rain, so they could be married by a pastor they knew. They had traveled all night and by the time they arrived were soaked to the bone. When they returned the next day, Una's mother was not pleased, but allowed them to stay with her for a time.

Una was a hard working woman who loved her family and did her best, but by the mid 1940s she had enough. Selling everything off, she loaded up an old car which belonged to her daughter and son-in-law, and with the children and a few possessions they had left and moved to Oregon. There John was working as a carpenter in the sleepy little town of Parkdale, which lies at the base of Mt. Hood. They settled with their family, becoming an integral part of the community.

Grandma Una worked for the AGA Fruit Company for many years, as packer and sorter, until she was forced to retire. She and her family belonged to the Troutcreek Baptist Church which later moved to Odell, Or, and became First Baptist of Odell. She had a great faith in God.

Charity Jane Ray (1850-1927). Charity was born and died in Macon County, North Carolina. At age 17, 23 November 1867, in Macon County, she married 16 year old Silas Wilson (1851-1890). Silas was born in Yancy County, North Carolina, and died in Macon County, North Carolina. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Hensley Wilson.

She lived 76 years and he 39 years. They are both buried in Briartown Baptist Cemetery, Macon County, North Carolina.

They had ten children, 3 daughters and 7 sons.

At age 37, 26 December 1889, John married 27 year old Rebecca Josephine Fouts (1862-1902), daughter of William Riley and Mary Lucinda Tanner Fouts. Rebecca had Tuberculosis. John Frank Ray lived 72 years and Rebecca 39. They had six children, 2 daughters and 4 sosn.

James Robert Ray (1858-1950). James was a miner. At age 20, 13 February 1878, he married 16 year old Candice Fouts (1861-1906), daughter of Riley and Mary Lucinda Tanner Fouts. They had three children, 1 daughter and 2 sons.

At age 49, on 26 May 1907, Widower James Robert Ray married 39 year old Virginia Adeline Wild.(1868-1954), daughter of Joseph Manning and Rebecca A. Mitilda Bryson Wild. They had one daughter.

James Robert lived 92 years; his first wife Candice Fouts lived 44 years, and his second wife Virginia Adeline Wild lived 86 years. James and Candice are buried at Cowee Baptist Church in Macon County and Candice Fouts is buried at Old Baptist Church, Franklin, Macon County, North Carolina.
