Descendants of Frank Paris Hunter
1-Frank Paris Hunter [40], son of William A. Hunter
[42] and Emaline Ray [43], was born on 6 Apr 1879 in
Granbury, Hood, Texas, died on 20 Mar 1950 in Marietta, Cobb Co, GA at age 70,
and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Marietta, Cobb Co, GA. The cause of
his death was cerebral hemorrhage due to hypertension and arteriosclerosis.
General Notes: Shortly after
Frank was born the family moved to Cherokee County, Georgia. They arrived there in the fall of 1879. in
the community of the Kelp Community . He
would spend the next twenty years in the area.
About 1902 or 1903 Frank and
Minnie moved to Hunt County, Texas. Hunt
County is about twenty to thirty miles northeast of Dallas and Hood County,
where he was born, is about twenty to thirty miles southwest of Dallas. And Paris, Texas (his namesake), is about
twenty miles northwest of Hunt County.
They returned to Cherokee County,
Georgia, before 1906.
In 1908, the family was living in
Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia.
By trade, he was a
machinist. He worked for Glover Machine
Works on Butler Street a long time and Georgia Marble for a long time. He also worked for Continental Can Company in
Atlanta, they moved to Alabama, and for a while, he would work in Alabama on
weekdays and come back to Marietta on weekends.
After that he worked for Georgia Newspapers until it closed down. His last job was with Mitchell's furniture on
Butler Street.
Note - Butler Street, the
location of Glover Machine Works and Mitchell Furniture was only a few blocks
from Manget Street, which was walking distance.
For transportation the family had
at one early time a horse and a buggy. Cars Frank owned: Model T Ford, Essex, and "Dork"
(?).
In 1911, the family was living on
Waterman Street in Marietta, just a few blocks south of the Courthouse.
In 1914, they were living on Clay
Street in Marietta.
In 1916, they were living on a
farm on a portion of what now (1989) is part of Lockheed Georgia Corporation.
By 1920, they moved to Manget
Street. Minnie and Frank would spend the
rest of their lives there. Manget Street
is the west border of the Larry Bell Park Complex, which now (not then) is
where the Cobb County Civic Center is.
He left most of the discipline of
the children up to Minnie. He would
threaten to whip them, but it was Minnie who usually dealt out the whippings.
On 21 July 1948, Minnie Victoria
(TYSON) HUNTER died at the age of sixty-eight.
That same summer we moved into
the house on Manget Street to help "Grandpa" HUNTER. I had just turned seven.
Across the street was Larry Bell
Park. Tennis Courts were being graded
off, and down across the creek a swimming pool was under construction.
For the next twenty months I got
to know my Grandfather well. He told me of the old days. Friends, relatives, and places. I was amazed, which fueled him to
continue. Unfortunately, through time I
have forgotten those valuable recollections.
I enjoyed them for the moment, but preserving them to hand down did not
enter my mind.
He had an old gray cat named Tom
that came and went.
He had one friend that worked at
Mitchell Furniture drop by to see him from time to time. He was always on foot. They would have a nip of hard whiskey
together, chat a while and he would be on his way.
Grandpa kept his whiskey hidden under
the house. He would have a healthy gulp
of it everyday, wipe his lips and made a big "sigh" sound with his
breath.
The first Christmas I spent there
Santa Claus brought my sister Frances and me bikes. Her's was blue and mine was red. Grandpa Hunter and my father were my training
wheels. They would take turns holding
the bike up for a few runs. I remember
the first time that I finally went solo Grandpa got the idea of pushing as a
start only down the hill on Manget from East Dixie Avenue to the front of the
house. He did, I learned the skill of
balance on a bike while coasting with Grandpa Hunter behind me.
He showed the art of whittling
wood and making flips, or sling- shots
from forks. He said dogwood trees made
the best fork frames for flips.
I think it was the Spring or
Summer of 1947 that a truck pulled up in front of the house and a middle age
woman got out and looked around. Grandpa had a metal chair that he enjoyed
sitting in under the shade at the south side of the house. He stood up and walked over and asked the
woman if he could help her. They talked
for along time. She left. He turned towards the house to walk back - he
was shaken - and crying. He had just met
his oldest child. The McClure's girl
child.
That was the only time they met.
The house had a fireplace in the
living room. Grandpa would get up before
anyone else and start the fireplace.
Usually, I would be the second one up.
One morning while standing by the fire-
place warming up to it a spark popped out and ignited my paja-mas. In seconds the bottom part of my clothes were
in flames. Grandpa immediately threw me
down and beat the flames out. I had to
go to the hospital for serious leg burns.
He saved my life.
Seventeen days before his
seventy-first birthday he died in the old Hospital in Marietta on Cherokee
Street.

after. Ironically, his neighbor the
Delks were his biggest competitor in the downtown barber shop business.

Hi Eddie, right now Ocala is our
winter place. We will be here January and February. We plan to be in Marietta
five months and Ocala seven months per year. The winter climate in Ocala is
mild and pleasant. Lots of flowers blooming, oranges on our trees, palm trees
everywhere. We have 3.74 acres just a mile or so from US 441 and Ocala in a ...
See Morefarmette type neighborhood. It has a pasture behind the main yard we
plan to fence for our present and future horses. Lots of lawn to cut. I have
room for all six of my little boats to rest between daytrips. My grandfather,
"Pa", took us fishing many times and the love for the water rubbed
off on me. I understand he built boats and I do too. He might not have
appreciated my kayaks and sailboats but he would have loved my motor boat.

CINDY'S GARDEN
Mabry Middle Students will
continue to grow in memory of former teacher.
By Sue Meade
Marietta Daily Journal Staff
Writer
For 18 years Cindy Crain Wheeler planted
seeds of knowledge in her sixth grade social studies students at Mabry Middle
School. Now, her former students are
planting seeds in her honor, so her memory lives and grows.
Known as Cindy's Garden, a living memorial
to the late Mrs. Crain Wheeler was dedicated May 3. A lifelong resident of Marietta, Mrs. Crain
Wheeler died of complications of cancer in September 1999.
"She was an excellent and vivacious
teacher, with a passion for teaching.
She was a wonderful teacher and role model. She was like an icon at the school,"
principal Gerri Ray said.
"This is what she would have wanted
if she were here now, she'd find a way
to have her class out here," she added.
Cindy's Garden brings new life to the west
side of the middle school. The garden is
located just outside the beloved teacher's former classroom.
The plaque on the garden bench is
inscribed "Her genuine love of teaching children touched countless
lives."
The garden has helped bring some solace to
her parents, lifelong Cobb residents Robert and Evelyn Crain.
"We really like this garden. I think it's really great that they did
it. I'm not a gardener, but I'm going to
help keep this up." Crain said.
"Everything they have done has
included students and that's what Cindy would have wanted. The entire school is like a family,"
Mrs. Crain said. The Crains plan to give
yearly funding to the school's Environmental Committee to help with upkeep and
future expansion.
The garden project has not only help
beautify the school grounds, but it has formed a bond between students,
teachers, and parents. It seems to be a
welcoming magnet for memories of the much loved teacher. While the Crains
visited the garden earlier this week, students and teachers stopped by to share
stories.
"She was a very good teacher, very
involved. She made learning fun."
Said eight grade student Alyson Snow.
Alyson and classmate Carla Bourke sang "This Day," at the
recent garden dedication ceremony.
"You walk by here and you think of
her. You always know, this is Mrs.
Wheeler's garden," said former student Holly Hansen.
Noted events in her life were:
•
School teacher at Maybry Middle School in Marietta, Ga.
•
She enjoyed hobbies. Genealogy
•
She had a residence in Kennesaw, Cobb Co, GA.
•
Her obituary was published. Cindy Crain Wheeler, sixth-grade Cobb
teacher
by Celia Sibley, staff writer.
Cobb County teacher Cindy Crain Wheeler of
Kennesaw wore tennis shoes so she could keep up with her six-grade students.
She had a closet full of them - in
assorted colors - to match her clothes, said Tammi Jecaobson of Marietta, who
taught with her for more than 12 years at Mabry Middle School.
Spirited with red hair and dancing blue
eyes, Ms. Wheeler managed to be inspring as well as strict, Mrs. Jacobson
said. "She was energetic, tiny, and
really gave herself to the kids and was always spending her own money on
supplies and books. She loved social
studies and wrote plays for the children to perform. She was a 24-hour-a-day teacher," Mrs.
Jacobson said.
Ms. Wheeler, 42, died Friday of
complications from cancer at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
The funeral is 2 p.m. today at Roswell
Street Baptist Church. Mayes Ward-Dobbins
Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Wheeler, a Cobb County native, taught
sixth grade at Mabry Middle for 18 years and was the social studies
coordinator. She was the School's
teacher of the Year in 1997-1998.
She chaired the scholarship selection
committee of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society for women in education, and she
served on numerous other committees, including one that chose textbooks for
Cobb County schools, Mrs. Jacobson said.
"She loved to divide her kids up for
group work. She was a very hands-on
teacher. The kids were involved all the
time, and she was in the middle of whatever they were doing, not waching from
afar, "she said.
Ms. Wheeler was dianosed withlymphoma when
she was a senior at McEachern High School in 1975. This illness dogged her for years. Her mother Evelyn Crain of Marietta said she
believed Ms. Wheeler was "called to teach" after she worked as a substitute
teacher and saw eight-graders who could not read properly.
Before then, she had intended to be a
criminal justice major at the University of Georgia, but she entered Kennesaw
State University, close to home, when a sport was found on her kidney, Mrs.
Crain said. She soon learn the sport was
only scar tissue, but the delay was long enough to change her life's direction.
She decided to teach the sixth grade
because students of that age tended to be more responsive to learning, her
mother said.
Ms. Wheeler earned a degree in secondary
education in 1980 at Kennesaw and went on to earn a master's degree in
education at the State University of West Georgia.
She was known for working long hours. On weekends, she liked to visit antique shops
and art exhibits or go to the movies with friends. Sometimes she traveled with
her parents in their motor home.
She was a fighter and a wonderful
inspiration to everybody she came into contact with," said Linda Campbell
of Woodstock, another teacher and friend.
"She was a good role model, and a mentor for all teachers."
Survivors other than her mother include
her father, Bobby Crain of Marietta; two sister, Pam Hammons of Kinston and
Jeanne Bellon of Marietta; and a brother Bobby H. Crain Jr., of Marietta.

Hunter [456] was born on 26 Apr 1941 in
Douglasville, Douglas Co, GA and died on 25 May 1966 in , , , Viet Nam at age
25.
General Notes: From the magazine
LOOKING GOOD DOUGLAS COUNTY, Vol 1, Number 3, March/April 1988. Article JERRY
HUNTER: he gave his life. By Vicki
Harsbarger.
Jerry Hunter, 25, was about to
complete his 34th mission of the Vietnam War.
The two months he had spent in
Vietnam had been filled with missions such as this one. Supply lines were sought, supply lines were
bombed.
The F-105 was a one-man jet
requiring much expertise of the pilot.
He delivered his bombs directly on the targeted bridge. The enemy fire hit the plane, he bailed out. The pilots watched as the parachute
disappeared from sight in the trees.
From the ground, a beeper signal
was heard by the pilots. They attempted
a rescue, but enemy fire struck from the area of the area where the parachute
had landed. A second plane was hit, and
the pilots were forced to return to base.
Two months later, American
soldiers were able to search the place where Robert Gerald Hunter went
down. Laos natives took the men to the
place where his body was buried.
Jerry began his final journey
home to be buried in the town where he was voted most talented of Douglas
County High School; where he dreamed of one day attending the Citadel; and
where of dream of becoming a pilot began with an essay written on how
Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic would affect the future of aviation.
Awards came early for Jerry
Hunter. He was honored with other
superlatives at Douglas County High School, with his claim to fame the title of
Most Talented. He was well known for his
artistic talents, and worked as editor of the school yearbook. He starred in the senior play.
"If anything happens to him,
he's doing what he wants to do", his wife of one year, Laura Ann Milby,
had said of Hunter. His parents, Robert
and Zelma, had suggested that he choose a line of work in keeping with his
Citadel degree in business administration, but he would not settle for less
than his dreams.
"He wanted to be the
best." Zelma Hunter reminisces.
"He always wanted to be a good pilot. He said if he made a good place for himself
in the Air Force he would make a career of it or he would be become a
commercial pilot," she said.
The handsome flyer passed all
manner of physical tests toprove his fitness of pilot training, which he
received at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta following his graduation from the
Citadel with honors. Minor surgery was
suffered twice by Hunter in order to fly the F-105, Mrs. Hunter said.
"He didn't want us to
worry," Mrs. Hunter says lovingly of her son. "I'd ask him on the telephone if he'd
been shot at, wanting him to say no. He'd say, "Yes, but they missed.
Don't worry about it, Mom, sometimes it's fun."
During the week while the Hunters
awaited the return of Jerry's body, the Chamber of Commerce acting on a motion
by Church of Christ Minister Richard Waggoner, passed a resolution recommending
that the park be memorably named Hunter Park.
On July 18, 1966, the Hunters'
hopes died with the news of their son's death and his returning body. On July 22, funeral services were held at the
Church where Jerry became a Christian, First Baptist Church of
Douglasville. The church was overflowing
as the first Douglas County military and 11th Citadel victim of the Vietnam war
was laid to rest.
Over 100 flags flew at
Douglasville businesses, painstakingly placed there by the remembering hands of
the Jaycees. The town was subdued as
businesses closed for the afternoon.
As faces were in unison at Rose
Memorial Gardens Cemetery toward the casket containing the remains of Robert
Gerald Hunter, the sound of planes roared overhead, urging the mourners to gaze
upward.
Four planes flew across the
horizon in unison, three planes returned.

2-Edwin Tyson "Ed"
Hunter Sr [5] was born on 13 Aug 1911 in
Marietta, Cobb Co, GA, died on 14 Jul 1988 in Marietta, Cobb Co, GA at age 76,
and was buried in Kennesaw Memorial Park Cem, Marietta, Cobb, GA.
General Notes: Ed first worked at
Glover Machine Works in Marietta where his father worked.
He was in the National Guard. He had two memorable experiences in the guard:
(1) He was guarding Calloway Mills against strikers - he was one of the guards
guarding the residence of the Calloway Family.
A man tried to break into the house.
Ed and the man begin to scuffle and they fell off the porch. Ed fell on top of him and it killed the man.
He had to appear in front of Governor Eugene Talmadge for him to officially
pardon him for the death. And (2)
another time he was guarding the Governor's Mansion in Atlanta. He had orders not to let anyone in unless
they had proof of business or an official pass. Eugene's son Herman Talmadge
strolled up to enter and Ed refused to let him enter. After that they replaced him with someone who
"could recognize the family".
He became a patrolman for the City of
Marietta, and worked his way up to be the Chief of the Marietta Police
(1949-1952). For a year or so he was a
guard at Lockheed. Then he was the Chief
of the Cobb County Police. Because of
politics he left the county force and worked various jobs as a guard or law
enforcer, which included the Kennesaw Police and a deputy of the Cobb County
Sheriff's Department. In 1960, he ran
with Buna Walker for the Sheriff's office, with Buna to be the Sheriff and Ed
to be the chief deputy. They lost to
Kermit Sanders (the incumbent). He was a
armed truck guard for Wells Fargo when he
retired.
Throughout his career as a policeman I
have only heard of danger twice. Once he
chased a suspect into an alley and the suspect turned around and pointed a gun
at him and pulled the trigger - by some miracle it only clicked. Another time an angry arrestee slammed the
barred jail door on his hand breaking it.
Little known fact: He had the talents of
an artist. He could have been an
illustrator or a cartoonist with a little training.
He was a great story teller to little
children. He loved to sit a niece or
nephew down close to him and tell him a long involved adventure story involving
someone of their gender and age. The
child would be completely absorbed in the tale that Ed weaved as he told
it. Also, shortly before Christmas he
would call his young nieces and nephews and tell them he was Santa with a
hearty 'Ho Ho' and go over their list with them. He always looked very delighted when he hung
up the phone.
He was a very gentle soft spoken man. I only heard him raise his voice once - and
that was to our dog that would chase behind us in the car to town. That irritated him.
He didn't give religion a serous thought
until he was in his fifties. Then he
joined the Crestview Baptist Church and was saved. Then, a couple years later
when they moved to west of Marietta he was a charter and active member of Due
West Methodist Church.
He always wore plain dark dress pants and
either a white dress shirt or a pale blue dress shirt. He never wore anything sporty like a shirt
with a design, polo styled shirt or any kind of sport pants or shorts. It just
wasn't him.
They lived in various parts of Marietta:
Whitlock Avenue, East Dixie Avenue, Atlanta Street, Wayland Street, Manget
Street, Richard Street, and Old Hickory Drive.
While we're writing about police,
let's pay tribute to Ed Hunter a dedicated, honest officer of 50 years of
service who died this week at 76.
Hunter was Cobb County Police
chief under Commission Chairman Rholie Ward. When Ward went out of office,
Hunter became Marietta police chief.
As county chief, Hunter was
involved in an unforgettable incident. Thirty-five years ago, Cobb County was a
dry county. If John Q. Citizen wanted a snort he had to "go to the
river" to liquor stores in Fulton County along the Chattahoochee River.
But most private clubs in Cobb
like the Elks, Legion, Moose, Marietta Country Club and at least two
fashionable restaurants served liquor by the drink.
Hunter thought it hypocritical
that his officers would arrest someone for having a scant of moonshine while
liquor sales continued at private clubs.
So it wasn't surprising when
Harvey Hester, the former Congressional Medal of Honor owner of Smyrna's Aunt Fanny's
Cabin, rang up Hunter to ask him to arrest an employee who stole booze from the
bar and stashed it away in the nearby woods.
Instead, Hunter sent a raiding
party to Aunt Fanny's, booked Hester and confiscated a truck load of whiskey.
Hunter didn't have a list of who not to arrest. If you violated the law, he
arrested you.

For some, flag no part of heritage
Colin Campbell - Staff
Thursday, January 18, 2001
The main reason Georgia's state
flag of 1956 (which includes the Confederate battle flag) is still flying is
that most white Georgians like the flag, resent being told it's offensive, or
both. But there are clearly some white Georgians --- even among those very
proud of their Southern heritage --- who want to see the flag changed. Excerpts
from their letters:
Rockwell T. Hunter, Marietta:
"Please add my name to the list of descendants of Confederate soldiers
supporting a change in the current flag. I also happen to be a very
conservative voter, yet I favor changing this upsetting symbol."
Rocky believes in going by rules,
regulations, and traditions. He will only vote on the first Tuesday of
November, even though, to lighten to load, in his voting area one can vote up
to a week before hand and he must have pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving.
He has a mix hunting terrier

Marietta, on what is now part of Lockheed Georgia Corporation. As a young man he was considered one of the
best baseball players in the area. He
was considered or offered for professional baseball. He married Lola Jene
TURNER (Aug 11 1918 - Oct 5, 1996 ). They lived most of their married life in the
Fair Oaks Community of Marietta
between Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive.
Doug had a very quick wit and was funny
person. At family get togethers he would keep all his nieces and nephews
giggling.
About August of 1983 he and I went
together to the John Hunter Descendent Reunion in Blairsville, Georgia he
seemed to have a delightful time, seeing distant cousins that he did not even
know existed, and a few he ran in that he worked at Lockheed with that he
didn't know he and they were related.
Doug died with heart failure at the age of
fifty-nine. He is buried near his Turner
in-laws at Midway Presbyterian Church on
Dallas Highway just outside of Marietta.
He was a Marietta Fireman in
1948.

General Notes: Stanley was born in Marietta, Georgia, on Manget
Street. In high school he was considered
one of the tops athletes of the time. He was captain of Marietta High School's
football team in 1938.
Stanley
was in the National Guards with his older brothers and went into the
Army during World War II. He was in the
D-Day invasion of Normandy.
Patrolman Ed Hunter, of the
Marietta Police Department, has received from his brother, S/Sgt. John Stanley
Hunter, a copy of orders that were read citing the 35th Division Inf., part in
the Normandy Invasion.
The unit, according to the
orders, attacked on 35 of the first 45 days of the invasion. It played a decisive part in the St. Lo
Battle, overrunning key defense positions of the enemy.
The 35th spearheaded hand-to-hand
fighting throughout the peninsula. Then it rushed through France often
proceeding 100 miles a day in advance fighting, taking Cloyes, Chateaudun, and
Orleans all in one day. Within a few
days it captured 3,500 prisoners.
Sgt. Hunter, who attended
Marietta High School, entered the service soon after graduation, and was
assigned to the 35th in 1943, when it was training at Camp Rucker, Ala. The division entered Normandy June 5-6.
He was at one time a plain cloths
detective for the City of Marietta Police Department. After that, he worked in the City's Electric
Department. At one time he owned half of
a service station of Powder Springs
Street with his brother-in-law Jim Frasure.
And then he worked for Lockheed in management until he retired. Now, he is a bailiff for the Courts.
They were very active members of the
Maple Avenue Church in Marietta.
Stanley's recipe for his famed peanut brittle is in the Cooking with
Good Cooks from the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church (published 1988).
During their married life they have lived
in various places in Marietta, mostly on the Westside, but have strayed twice
north near Canton Road. Sarah now lives
on Stewart Avenue in an older house that she and Stanley completely restored
and remodeled.

June 6, 1944. That date is
forever etched in our collective history as a day the world changed. It is a
day when a force was unleashed upon the Earth which had never been seen, and
has never been repeated. The bold thought that the entire force of American,
Canadian, British, and French armies could cross the English Channel aboard
ships and stake a claim for returning Europe to the rule of law and democracy
in the face of incredible challenges made it almost inconceivable that success
was imminent - but everyone believed it was.
While most people celebrate their
patriotism and the sacrifice of our armed forces on Memorial Day - I never do.
I choose June 6th for that memory because the sacrifice of that day means so
much more to who I am and who I hope my son can become. My hero was a part of
the force unleashed, and it was an experience that he shared with me only in snipets
over the years.
John Stanley Hunter was born in
Marietta, Georgia on July 4, 1920, the 7th son of Frank and Minnie Hunter. He
was named for his uncle John and the doctor who delivered him. As I heard it,
he began working as a very young boy. His first job was taking care of Colonel
Manget's chickens. By the age of 13, he was spending his summers with the
Georgia National Guard as a “runner” for senior staff.
Education was secondary, and
school was put off for two years while Stanley worked to help the family make
ends meet. He became a gifted athlete - another in the line of “Hunter Boys”
who roamed the halls and sidelines of Marietta High School - eventually
spending two summers playing Minor League Baseball before entering Georgia
Military College in 1940 to play football - hoping to catch on the following
year as a back for the University of Georgia. Having been with the National
Guard for a few years, his unit was activated for 1 year of duty in December
1940. Instead of transferring to a unit at GMC, he chose duty over school and
sports. Stanley spent the next year in training - sorties on the Cumberland
River in Tennessee, ski patrol in Canada, “hikes” through Appalachia, preparing
for conditions everyone hoped they would never see. But he made through his
year of active duty - and was on his way home on December 7, 1941. On that day,
his duty was extended indefinitely.
It would be years before his unit
saw duty on the front lines. He was lucky to not be sent to the oceans of the
Pacific like his brothers Jack and Dick, or Sicily & North Africa like his
brother W.C. That changed on June 6, 1944. The next 11 months changed his life
and many others.
My granddaddy never talked about
those things much. That day on a beach in France was something that always
fascinated me. All I have are a few memories of stories - the right questions
asked at the right time - that gave me answers that most never knew. Did you
get shot? “I came close, lying on the beach, one zipped past and took my watch
- and left a trail in the sand.” “It was hard, and wet. And we were trapped on
that beach with no where to go. And they started calling for Bangalore's - and
we passed them along the line, and they blew our way clear and we moved in. We
tried not to notice what was going on around us.” “We moved from there to St.
Lo - that's where I got picked up and taken on the prison train heading for
Germany. But I got lucky, and got away.” From my Dad, I know that by “got away”
he meant he overpowered the guard. Relying on his football skills, he tackled
the man off of the open box car - killing his captor in the fall. He then made
his way back through France - hiding at the farm of an American deserter from
the first War - who made him promise not to tell where he was.
Things about that time are
guarded in the unknown of war and life on the front. I do know that by D-Day,
my granddaddy was older than most - he would turn 24 the following month - and
was probably the “old man” of the unit. I know that during the course of field
actions, he worked his way from Sergeant to Captain. He was awarded a Bronze
Star. I will never know the details of those days, but I still look to fill in
those blanks.
After my grandparents passed, as
the historian in the family, I claimed the box of photos from the War. This
photo was in it with the following written on the back: “VE Day - There sits
Hard-Hearted Hunter, he has put down his gun and won't fight anymore.” Anyone
who knew Stanley Hunter would find that inscription something hard to
reconcile. If there was any way to describe Stanley, “Hard-Hearted” was not it.
To me, it explained everything. It explained his love of home, of life, of
family. It explained why he would spend hours helping his grandson break in a
new baseball glove - and never tell him that his arm hurt for a week afterwards
from throwing curves and knuckles that astounded the 12 year old. Most of all,
it explained why he kept those stories of war close - because he knew, and none
of us should ever have to.
So tonight, after Brenna's Dance
Recital (which will be stunning, I am sure), I will quietly pop in my DVD of
Saving Private Ryan and watch the first 30 minutes, and think about what
Stanley Hunter saw and survived 65 years ago

3-John Stanley "Johnny"
Hunter Jr [481] was born on 26 May 1947 in
Marietta, Cobb Co, GA.
General Notes: Building a legacy.
Since the '30s, members of the
Hunter family have attended Marietta High.
They now help pave the way for future students.
A lot may have changed at Marietta High
School in the past 70 years, but one thing has stayed the same. There's almost always been a Hunter somewhere
in the student body.
"I've had a relative of some sort at
the school almost every year," said John Hunter, class of 1965. "They didn't all graduate, but there's
always been someone there."
Hunter can count among his close relatives
four captains of the Marietta football team, one president of the student body,
countless baseball and football players, cheerleaders and band members and a
mayor of Marietta.
Hunter is the second of three consecutive
John Hunters to graduate from Marietta High School. His father John Stanley Hunter, who attended
the school in the '30s, was the only one of four brothers who attended the
school to graduate - the other three left school to go to war.
All of them returned after the war. One of them, Dick Hunter, became mayor of
Marietta and had 12 children. He was not
the only Hunter who beleived in large families.
In all, John Hunter can boast 52 first cousins.
Almost all stayed in the area,
guarenteeing that a Hunter would be at Marietta High at almost all times.
"We're big, but we're still a
tight-knit family," said John Hunter's daughter Haley Meaders, 'Class of
88. "We all stayed close by."
Growing up in a family that had so much
history in the area was a unique experience, Mrs. Meaders said. A few of the teachers at the school have
taught three generations of Hunters.
"People were always asking me,
"Now which one are you?" I was
always one of 'those Hunter girls,' all through high school," Mrs. Meaders
said. "I loved being that." When Missy Hunter, John Hunter's niece,
graduated in 1999, the school was left without a Hunter for the first time in
several decades. The Hunters still feel a strong connection to the school,
though, and are still fixtures at Marietta High School football games.
"We've had the same seats since our
kids were little," said Jeannie Hunter, John's wife. "We still go even though we don't really
know anybody there."
The family will now have a different kind
of fixture at the new high school in order to raise for money for a courtyard
at the new building, the Marietta High School PTSA is selling memorial bricks
and marble benches.
John Hunter has organized his brother,
uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and their spouses to buy memorials for the
courtyard of the new high school will house 50 Hunter bricks and a memorial
bench.
"You lay out that many bricks showing
that many years at the school. It shows
a lot of tradtition," Hunter said.
The family did not just want to show their
tradition, but wanted to help the new school which they enthusiastically
support.
The family is hoping that more Marietta
familes will follow their lead in recognizing the tradition of Marietta High
School and supporting the new building.
"We're excited about having a new
state-of-the-art-school." Mrs. Hunter said. "This is the school our grandchildren are
going to go to. I would like to see more Marietta families get involved".

General Notes: John and a friend
were caught carrying their school spirit
beyond the campus. In November of 1990,
John and Davis P. BALTZ hung a sign on a railroad bridge belonging to the CSX
Transportation Company that said "Welcome to Hell" - which was meant
for the football team and fans of Southwest DeKalb High School that would soon
be going under the sign to meet for state play offs. The Marietta Police arrested them for
trespassing and CSX Transportation Company said to throw the book at them. It appears that the prosecutor saw how
foolish the charges were and did not
prosecute, after all, nothing was
stolen, no one or no property was injured - just a harmless sign to promote the
Marietta High School Spirit.

Close your eyes and imagine a
glowing pink sunset and an old log cabin on a rolling green lawn. A tractor
pulling a trolley appears with beautiful young bridesmaids - 17 in all -
dressed in pink gowns accented with apple green and yellow. Then the bride and
father-of-the-bride emerge on a buggy. She descends in a lace and linen gown.
That's the way it was June 26
when Garrett Phillips and Frasure Hunter, both of Marietta, married at the
Phillips' family farm in Lebanon, Tenn.
The reception was held in the
barn. Tables were covered with vintage tablecloths in pinks, greens and yellows
and topped with fresh floral arrangements created by family friends Barbara
Allen, Betty Haverly and Adrian Pressley.
The couple left the reception in
a vintage green pickup truck under a dark sky lit with a brilliant fireworks
display. At the end of the day, one guest commented that they have never seen a
happier bride.

Gingrey's young chief of staff
looks to bring fresh ideas to table

MARIETTA - At 24, Marietta native
Mitch Hunter already has gathered more political experience than many people
twice his age.
He has worked on a handful of
political campaigns, ranging from candidates for Congress to the presidency.
Last fall, he managed the successful Congressional campaign of former state
Sen. Phil Gingrey.
Next week, Hunter will take on
his biggest task so far - moving to Washington and beginning his tenure as
Gingrey's chief of staff. And while he has spent the past year managing a
campaign staff filled with people significantly older than himself, Hunter said
his youth has not been a barrier to the work he has done or still has left to
do.
“I have not operated while
thinking about my age, and because I have not made my age an issue, it has not
become an issue,” he said. “On the campaign staff, at least half of the staff
was older than myself, and it never became an issue.”
Hunter admits that “there are so
many things that I don't bring to the job because of my age.”
“But what I do have is the trust
of the congressman, which I believe I have earned through hard work, and that's
the most important thing,” he said. “I have to do the same as any freshman
staffer on the Hill, and that's to learn the ins and outs of life on the Hill.”
And being young does have its
advantages in terms of passion for the job.
“I still have plenty of energy,
and I have a passion to help Congressman Gingrey serve the people of the 11th
District well and do good for our country,” he said.
Those who know Hunter and have
political experience of their own have few doubts about his abilities.
State Rep. Judy Manning (R-Marietta),
who has known him since he was a baby, said she is not surprised Hunter has
managed to come so far, so fast.
“And quite frankly, he was kind
of like a breath of fresh air and brought with him a lot of fresh ideas,” said
Ms. Manning, whose son Hank is married to Gingrey's daughter, Gannon.
“I don't know of anything
negative to say about Mitch,” she said. “He's who you wish your daughter would
marry.”
Hunter's roots in the Marietta
community run deep. He was among the fourth generation of his family to
graduate from Marietta High School. His father, David Hunter, serves as vice
chairman of the Marietta Housing Authority.
Long before his involvement in
politics, Hunter came to know Gingrey while still a small child. The Gingrey's
lived a block away and became family friends. Hunter later attended high school
with the Congressman's daughter, Laura Neill.
“I have known his family, for the
most part, for all my life, and I've always known (the Congressman-elect) to be
a good, honest, decent man - despite what our opponents said about him,” Hunter
said.
Gingrey said he first chose
Hunter as campaign manager because of his work with the Republican party and
because the two share a similar set of values. After a year observing him on
the campaign trail, the Congressman-elect said he continues to be impressed.
“He certainly came highly
recommended to me,” Gingrey said. “The bottom line is I hired him first as
campaign manager, and what I saw in Mitch Hunter was an intense loyalty, a
dedication and an extreme work ethic. ... I couldn't be happier with my
decision.”
For most of his life, Hunter had
planned to become a doctor. He entered the University of Georgia and enrolled
in pre-med courses. But Hunter soon discovered that medicine was not where his
heart was.
What he did feel passionate about
was politics - a passion he said he inherited from his great-grandmother,
Lucille “Sugar” Suhr. She became involved in the Republican Party during the
Depression. She also worked in the office of the late Georgia Sen. Walter
George, a Democrat, in the 1930s and later instilled her lifelong love of
politics into Hunter.
Hunter began his work with
campaigns while still a student at UGA. In spring 2000, he worked for
Republican Congressional candidate Sunny Warren, who ran unsuccessfully against
Democratic incumbent Cynthia McKinney in DeKalb County.
Hunter credits working for the
small campaign of about five full-time staffers for teaching him about the
political process in-depth.
“I got much more out of doing
that than I would have working as a sign guy with a higher profile campaign,”
he said.
Later in the year, Hunter worked
in North Carolina with the campaign of presidential candidate Steve Forbes,
conducting a petition drive in an attempt to get the Republican's name on the
ballot.
After graduating from college,
Hunter moved to Washington to work for the Republican National Committee. After
about six-months he returned to his native Marietta were he started work with
Gingrey.
Despite his dedication to
politics, Hunter said he has no ambitions at the point to run for office
himself.
“I see myself as a
behind-the-scenes person,” he said. “My job is to make Phil Gingrey look good,
and I don't look to promote myself in my new role.”
As for life after Gingrey leaves
office, Hunter said he tries not to look that far into the future.
“At one point in my life I had a
long-term goal and that was to become a doctor,” he said. “And then I realized
that it was more of a goal than a passion.”

The Marietta native and MHS grad
met Miss Erickson in Washington in 2003 when she applied for a job as a press
secretary in Gingrey's office. That job went to former Democratic U.S. Rep.
Buddy Darden's campaign press flak, Brian Robinson, one of the best political
spinners in Georgia politics. Miss Erickson landed a job with U.S. Rep. Dave
Weldon (R-Fla.), who, like Gingrey, is a physician. Jaillene is the daughter of
