James Dillard Shields
James Dillard Shields, 71, of
Andrews, formerly of Franklin, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2007, in a Murphy
hospital.
A native of Macon County, he had
moved to Cherokee County in 1994. He was the son of the late James Frank and
Paralee Grant Shields.
He was a retired employee of
Baker Furniture. Dillard was a member of the Junaluska Baptist Church. He loved
playing gospel music and fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Mary West
Shields; two sons, Jimmy Wesley Shields and James Michael Shields, both of
Hickory; three sisters, Brenda Gail Wilbanks of Dallas, Ga., Delores Ann Smith
of McDonough, Ga., and Mary Elizabeth Phillips of Jacksonville, Fla.; two
brothers, Stanley Shields of Thomasville and William Shields of Andrews; four
grandchildren; one great- grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, April 7, at noon, in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home in Andrews, with
the Rev. Lewis Welch officiating.
Burial was in Valleytown
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jamie, Earl and Kenneth West, Billy Carringer,
Matthew Shields and Brian McCoy.
The family received friends on
Saturday, from 10 to 11:45 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Church, P.O. Box 1325, Andrews, NC 28901.
Ivie Funeral Home in Andrews was
in charge of the arrangements.

enjoyed Our Heritage by Margaret Walker Freel. I feel fortunate to have
attended the Ray reunion. My name is James Terry Wilson, son of Charlie S.
Wilson, Son of Thomas Wilson, son of Silace Wilson, son of Samuel Wilson. I am
related to the Rays because of Charity Jane Ray, wife of Silace Wilson. I had
always known I was kin to Rebecca Ray May, but until the reunion I did not know
how. I wish I had gotten one of the handouts about genealogy but failed to do
so because I was so excited about all I had learned.
I graduated at Nantahala in 1966,
retired as a teacher at Murphy High School in 2000, served four years in the
Air Force and almost 17 years in the National Guard.

Irene was the daughter of Lallie Sarah Jane Ivester Turner and Thomas Greene
Wilson. Clara was married to Kenneth Allen. They had two sons, Steve and
David. Clara had a brother Junior who
died from leukemia while in the navy. Junior was also a drag racer and was one
of the first to go under the polar ice cap in a submarine. Clara had a sister,
Ruth, and a brother, Thad. I didn't recognize Ruth because of her white hair,
it was black when I was a boy.
Clara was a victim of polio as a
child. While in the nursing home she was so skinny she had almost no flesh on
her frame. She had ostioporosis and Parkinson's. She had some speech problems. Her hair was
always fixed in a decorative style and wore a lot of make-up on her face.

COBB COUNTY - Accused killer
Dwayne Wilson pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the 2005 death of his mother,
Mildred Kimbrough, a retired vice president of Life University.
Wilson's murder trial was set to
begin Monday before Judge Steve Schuster in Cobb Superior Court, but Wilson's
defense attorney Hylton Dupree entered a guilty plea to one count of malice
murder. As recently as Thursday, Dupree said he still planned to go ahead with
a trial.
After Wilson was led into the
courtroom dressed in navy, jail-issued clothing, assistant district attorney
Jessie Evans outlined the murder with details not previously released to the
public.
Evans described a relationship between
Mrs. Kimbrough and her son that had been virtually nonexistent for the past
decade. He said in the weeks prior to her death, Mrs. Kimbrough, then 75, began
taking steps to remove Wilson from her will.
Evans said that on the evening of
Aug. 6, 2005, Wilson went to his mother's Smyrna home and after he didn't find
her there, waited next door at the home of Mrs. Kimbrough's sister, June. Mrs.
Kimbrough's arrival at her home was the last time her family saw her alive.
After entering his mother's home,
Wilson hit his mother in the head with a wine bottle. He moved her to the
kitchen, then shot her in the back of the head with a 9 mm handgun. Wilson then
called 911 to report that his mother had been murdered and shot himself in the
chest.
As police entered the home,
Wilson shot himself in the chest a second time.
Dupree said Monday that his
client's insistence on pleading guilty to murder was not strictly because of
his involvement in the crime.
"I feel like Mr. Wilson may
be putting the interest of others before his own," Dupree said. "His
sole reason for entering a plea was because he didn't want to put his family
through a trial."
Dupree said because of Wilson's
suicide attempt after killing his mother, he employed a doctor to evaluate
Wilson's fitness to stand trial. He said Wilson is being treated for severe
depression, as well as high cholesterol and blood pressure.
Wilson, now 56, remained
unemotional in court Monday and declined to address Schuster or his many family
members who gathered in the courtroom. His daughter, Sheila Wilson, and his
sister, Linda Wilson, each addressed the court about how Wilson's crime has
affected the family.
Sheila Wilson said she now
suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder after the death of her grandmother
at the hands of her father, who called her and told her what he had done the
day of the murder.
She told the judge that even
though her father made the choice to take himself out of her life, the only way
she would feel safe was if he was jailed for the rest of his life.
"He chose the personal
gratification of killing my grandmother over walking me down the aisle,"
Ms. Wilson said.
Ms. Wilson described her
grandmother as a pioneer who was the first in her family to go to college after
growing up in a rural North Carolina orphanage during the Great Depression.
Mrs. Kimbrough established
herself in the chiropractic community before retiring as vice president of Life
University in 2002. She was the sister-in-law of former university president
Sid Williams.
"She barely got to stretch
her retirement legs," Ms. Wilson said.
Linda Wilson said she could
understand why her brother murdered her mother, although she did not condone
it. She claimed that Mrs. Kimbrough was verbally, emotionally and physically
abusive to various family members.
"(Wilson) said because she
had already done so much damage, he didn't want her to do anymore," Linda
Wilson said.
Mrs. Kimbrough and other Life
University administrators, including Williams, were ousted by the school's
board of trustees after the university - at one time the largest chiropractic
college in the country - lost its accreditation from the Council on
Chiropractic Education in 2002.
