John Hunter's Cabin
This is a postcard of John Hunter's Cabin that was in Union
County, Georgia, about 10 miles south of Blairsville.
John was born about 1775 in probably Burke County, North
Carolina, and died 1848 in this cabin.
It has been handed down that John left North Carolina in
about 1835. It is said that he moved to
Georgia because the State of North Carolina started taxing distilleries. Making whiskey was John Hunter's source of
income.
It was also handed down that while he and some of his sons
cleared off the land the other sons fought off the Indians. I'm
not sure that is entirely true.
Also on the postcard it states that it is the cabin of
Daniel England. That is not entirely
true. It was built by John Hunter and he
and his single daughter Martha lived in
it. When John died in 1848 his
daughter Harriet and her husband Daniel
England moved in with Martha.
It is not a very big dwelling. In the early 1980s my two sons and I went
into it. It was on the edge of a field
with the Nottely River behind it. The
entire cabin was no bigger than a great room in modern times. I found it interesting that a snake had
molted on jagged rocks framing the
fireplace. and left its skin there.
About five or so years ago whoever owns the land decided to
bulldoze the cabin. Charles Hunter
bought the house and had it taken apart
and each plank numbered so it could be reassembled some day.
