Children of Daniel W.and Sarah J. Garrett Petty
L to R: 1st Row: Wesley, Jim, ErvIn,
2nd Row: Alice and Nancy.
Sarah Alice Petty (1874 - 1958). Alice was born in Fannin County, Geirgia and
moved with her parents in 1890 when she
as about 16 years old to Murray County. She never marred. She
and her siblings Nancy and Alice and Wesley lived in the Petty Home. They farmed the land.
William Elijah Joseph Petty (1875 - 1935). Elijah is a direct line so he and his
wife Viola Ridley have their section,.
Nancy Jane Petty (1877 - 1965). Nancy was born in Fannin County .
She moved with her parents to
Murray County in 1890 at about age 13. She never married. She and
her siblings Alice and Wesley lived in the old Petty house and farmed
the land. She fell and broke her hip and
to be put in a nurse home.
Dawson Wesley Petty (1879 - 1960). Wesley was born in Fannin County,
Georgia. She moved with his parents to Murray County, at
about age 11. He and his sisters Nancy and Alice lived in
the old Petty House and farmed the land.
We visited Alice, Nancy, and Wesley several times through the
years. Wesley had a horse in a
gated horse-fence area beside the
barn. He told me that was my horse. I was pleased, luckily enough for everybody
that I didn't decided to carry it home with me.
One time we had Sunday dinner with them.
The milk tasted horrible. It was bitter.
It was straight from the cow with no machines making it taste better. On one of the visits while rambling around
upstairs, I found a shot gun leaned up against a corner wall and a brown
and white jug, just like I have seen cartoons of hillbillies use to hold their
moonshine in. I went down stairs to the
room the family were visiting in making a fool of myself, I had the shotgun and
the jug trying to sound like a hillbilly, little did I know I didn't have to
try very hard. In a blink of an eye
Wesley hopped up and yanked the shotgun from me. He said it was loaded. That was embarrassing.
After Alice had died and Nancy broke her hip and was put in nursing home
Wesley lived there by himself. One
night the old two story house burned up with him it. I
remember when my mother got the news she wept.
Ervin Petty (1882 - ? )
Ervin was born in Fannin County, Georgia, and at about
age 8 moved to Murray County, Georgia, with his parents. Jim married a lady who owned a boarding house
in Detroit.
He had at least two children. I head through my late uncle Roy Petty that
Ervin had a daughter that ran away from home to be with a circus.
Cousins Stanley and Osmo Petty in Detroit
He had a son named
Stanley Petty who went with my uncle Osmo and my aunt Ruby to Detroit to find a
job once. After Stanley retired he
travel a lot and dropped by to visit his cousins in Marietta several
times. Here is what I have about that:
Stanley visited his cousins in
Marietta and Murray County, Georgia, several times. One time he visit his cousin Carlton Petty
who operated a huge productive farm.
Stanley left insulted because he said Carlton did not even get off his
tractor while he was there.
On one of his visits to Marietta
he had just returned from tourning the Holy Lands. He wanted to tell his cousins what all he saw
and each time he started they got into a fuss among themselves (typical). Finally, giving up he got up to go and they
saw him to the car and Janie asked him when would he be back and he said he
didn't think he would be back.
Ervin Petty [2442], son of Daniel Webster Petty
[163] and Sarah Jane Garrett
[164], was born in 1882 and died on an
unknown date.

[2447] [MRIN: 1047].
James M. "Jim" Petty (1882 - 1956). Jim was born in Fannin County, Georgia, and
moved with his parents to Murray County, Georgia, when he was about 8 as
well. I don't think Jim and Ervin were
twins. Jim was a farmer and an excellent
horse trader. He knew how to make
money. At age 21, he married Lillie
Henry (1885-1983), age 16,in Murray County.
I got to talk to Lillie before she died She was in her 90s with a sharp mind with a wit. She was blind but handled herself well with that handicap. She told me that many years ago Jim's toes were frostbit. She said his siblings had to hold him down while their cousin, Dr. Willis Garrett amputated the toes.
