Frank Hunter, Head of Household 1910 thru 1940

These chronological dated census tells the story of Frank and Minnie Hunters kids coming of age.

Click on each image as you look at it to make them look larger and readable.

Hunter, Frank     31
            Minnie    30
             Herbert    9
              Beatrice   6
              Robert     3
              W.C.       1

The 1910 Census (above) takes a look at the family, probably on Waterman Street.  First of all, because of the handwriting  the family name was interpreted as Turner not Hunter.

It lists Frank has head of household, Minnie as wife, and the kids Herbert, Beatrice, Robert, and W.C.  W.C. was born 1908.  He was the last name listed, The next child, Ed would be born in 1911, after this Census was taken.

The next census, 1920, shows
                                                      Frank     41
                                                      Minnie    40
                                                      Herbert   18
                                                       Beatrice 16
                                                       Robert    13
                                                       W.C.      10
                                                       Edward    8
                                                       Jack         5
                                                       Douglas    4

Edward above is my father.  His name was really Edwin.  That and the Turner error in the 1910 Census is how Census research can sometimes go astray.
Also look at the census and see Joseph McEntyre  is head of a household with Robert and J.R.  Robert was 9 years old  Robert was Bobby's  McEntyre father, and  his father Joseph, age 27 was Bobby's grandmother, and now (2013) Bobby is over 2.5 times  his grandfather's age.  Time flies!

Hunter, Frank P.     50
Minnie                    50
Beatrice                  26
W.C.                      21
Frank J.(Jack)         15
Douglas                   13
John S. (Stanley)        9
James R. (Dick)         7

Hunter, Herbert        29
             Willie           28
              Ray               7
               Elizabeth       5
               Fay               3
On the 1930 Census Franks family starts at the bottom of one page and has to continue onto the next page. Next door to them is the Jolly Spence family.  I remember Jolly Spence.  He worked at the Atlanta Journal and Constitution press.  Emma Manget i s listed.  It shows she was born in New York.  The Mangets were world travelers .  They lived  on the corner of Manget Street and East Dixie Avenue.

Noticeably missing is my father,  Edwin Hunter, who would be  18 on this census.   This was the time he worked the summer for his Uncle Will Tyson and Will didn't pay him for it; also, Herbert Hunter is not in the household, but then he had his own household, next door.   Robert was probably working with the C.C.C. then.  The two new additions was Stanley and Dick, or as they were enumerated: John S. and James R.

Tyson, William O.  46
Lacy                         37
Billy                            2
Virginia                        1
Hunter, Edwin             19

By the way, here is Ed, as I mentioned, living will his uncle Will Obediah
Tyson, on the 1930 Census in Cherokee County, Georgia.  Also on this page of the census John Hunter is listed as living next to Will Tyson.  John Hunter  was/is John's uncle.  He was sandwiched with two uncles, from each parent.

Hunter, Frank   61
Minnie              60
Walter C.          32
Douglas P.         23
J. Stanley           19
J. Richard          17

Hunter, Herbert  39*
Willie                  38
Ray                    17
Elizabeth            15
Fay                    13

The 1940 Census shows Frank and Herbert separated by a few households.   I just didn't think of it because I didn't look at the numbers, but I see W.C. was at home at age 32 in 1940.  He must have been at least 33 when he joined the Army.  Jolly Spence is still there.  He was still there when I was there in 1950 too.   The White family and Holcomb family materialized within the past ten years.  I remember the Whites and the Holcombs were related.   The Maude Holcomb family lived in the same area that my friend Larry Holcomb lived at, and next door the White family with Cliff and Grace and their two children June and Harry - the names are a bit confusing.  Grace's name is listed but instead of Cliff White there is a Carl C. White, which I'm sure the C. stand for Cliff.  There is a J. Harris, which would be Harry,  June isn't listed, but June should have been about 3 years old then.  Cliff White was a councilman and after that Deputy Commissioner to Commissioner Herbert McCollum who was responsible for changing Cobb County form a farming community to an industrial community to cater to the Bell Bomber.  Interesting, next door to  Herbert Hunter's household is the Delk family household.  They were competitor barbers in the downtown Marietta area.

*My apologies for the ages not straight down.  On the unpublished copy they are straight.

Thomas J. Ridley & Maryetta L. Pullen's Children

Addie Jane Ridley (1882-1938).  Addie was born and died in Murray County.  She married  Virgil Enouch Davis (1887 - 1955).     Addie lived 56 years and Virgil lived 68 years.
After Addie died Virgil married Nova Catherine Bookout (1883-1956), daughter of Andrew Jackson Bookout and Sarah Elizabeth Ann Arrowood.    Sarah was previously married to Will Dunn.    Addie, Virgil, their two sons, and Sarah Elizabeth Arrowood are buried at Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia.
One of their sons died at birth.
The other son Virgil Enouch Davis, Jr. enlisted in World War II in the Air Corps and was accidentally killed in training:  Virgil enlisted in the Air Force, he was sent to Texas for training and during  maneuvers a bullet ricocheted and hit him in the head and killed him.

Frances Viola Ridley (1885-1968).  A separate section if about Frances and her husband William Elijah Joseph Petty.

Walter M. Ridley (1888-1953).  Walt was mentally challenged.  He stayed with opal and Viola for years.I heard he used to walk every day from Beaverdale to Crandall to let Viola take care of him.  Then he walked back that night.   In my preteen years I saw Walt a lot, enough for him to know my names and we talked.  I remember one time his niece Opal was mad because he urinated in the bathtub.   He always seemed very gentle and polite.  He always wore overalls. I think he also stayed with his sister Ruby Ridley Dickson.  He spent the last years of his life in the  Georgia State Hospital in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia.  He lived 64 years.   He is buried at Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery with his sister Ruby and her husband Babe in their plot.  He never married and had no children.

Henry Killian "Kate" Ridley (1891-1975).   Kate was a character.  I remember he visited us a couple of times and we visited him.  He moved to Detroit, and like his cousin Ervin Petty, married a landlady one time is his life.  And there were also four other marriages.  His last wife outlived him.  He said she could swing a powerful ax.
The marriages might not be in order:

Henry Killian "Kate" Ridley [5355], son of Thomas Jefferson Ridley [236] and Maryetta Ludarden Pullen [237], was born on 31 Oct 1891 in , Murray Co., GA, died on 28 Jul 1975 in Detroit, , MI at age 83, and was buried in Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery - Murray Co., GA.

Henry married Roxie Williams [5356] [MRIN: 1947].

Henry next married Mary Holland [5357] [MRIN: 1948]. Mary was born on 1 Feb 1902, died on 3 Mar 1940 at age 38, and was buried in Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery - Murray Co., GA. They had three children: Sarah Ruth, Twin Son, and Twin Daughter.

Sarah Ruth Ridley [7292] was born on 15 Mar 1937.

Sarah married John Crump [7293] [MRIN: 2737].

Twin Son Ridley [7294] was born on 15 Aug 1938 and died on 1 Sep 1938.

Twin Daughter Ridley [7295] was born on 15 Aug 1938 and died on 15 Sep 1938.

Henry next married Vertie Thomas [5358] [MRIN: 1949].

Henry next married Lula Whaley [5359] [MRIN: 1950]. Lula was born on 28 Sep 1888, died on 28 Oct 1946 at age 58, and was buried in Dawnville Cemetery, Whitfield Co., GA.

Henry next married Isabell Williams [5360] [MRIN: 1951].  They had one son: William Patton "Pat".

William Patton "Pat" Ridley [7296] was born on 14 Jun 1930.

William married Emma [7297] [MRIN: 2738].  They had four children: Stephen M., Robert V., Martha Elaine, and Dianna Gale.

Stephen M. Ridley [7298] was born on 19 Jun 1951.

Robert V. Ridley [7299] was born after 1953.

Martha Elaine Ridley [7300] was born after 1958.

Dianna Gale Ridley [7301] was born after 1960.
Robert V. Ridley (1894 - 1926).  Robert  had a short life.  He lived 32 years.  He was also married to Isabel Williams, as his brother Kate was.  Robert probably married her first and after he died Kate married her (just speculation).

Neally Ridley (1897 - abt 1897).  Died as an infant.

Ruby Velma Ridley (1900 - 1975).   Ruby married Babe Dickson (1898-1960), son of Mike Dickson and Alice Hayes.  Babe worked for her father.  I was told they were always struggling to make ends meet.  The person who told me this added, "That is what happens when you marry the help."
They had six children, four daughters and two sons.
Ruby lived 75 years and Babe 62 years.  They are buried in Sumac Presbyterian Cemetery in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia.  Also, in their plots are several  of their children and Ruby's brother Walt.

Thomas Jefferson Ridley and Maryetta Luddarden Pullen

Thomas Jefferson Ridley (1859-1939), son of Henry Ridley, Sr and Nellie Malinda Dyson Killian and Maryetta Ludarden Pullen (1856-1913), daughter of Greenville Pullen, Jr and Elizabeth Frances "Eliza" Bookout.

Thomas  Jefferson Ridley was born in Polk County, Tennessee, which is  near Murray County, Georgia, where he spent his formative years.  He was the fourth born of eight sons.

He was a farmer,  storeowner, on the Board of Education, Census taker, and from 1892 to 1900 Postmaster of Cohutta Springs.   From his different occupational  hats it appears he was a community leader.

Maryetta was born and died in Murray County.

They were married  6 January 1881 in Murray County.  Thomas was  21 and Maryetta was 24.  They had seven children,  four daughters and three sons.

When their daughter Viola Ridley and her husband and kids came from Gillette Wyoming via Virginia until  they found a permanent place to live they stayed with Thomas .  Maryetta had already died by then.  My mother felt her grandfather was not very tolerant of young children's antics.

Thomas Jefferson Ridley lived 80 years and Maryetta Ludarden Pullen Ridley lived 58 years.  They are buried at Sumac Presbyterian Church.

Thomas Jefferson's Ridley (head of household) family  1900 Census in Murray County, Georgia.   They are household number 79, the 3rd family down:

Children of Daniel W.and Sarah J. Garrett Petty

L to R: 1st Row: Wesley, Jim, ErvIn,
2nd Row: Alice and Nancy.

Sarah Alice Petty (1874 - 1958).  Alice was born in Fannin County, Geirgia and moved with her  parents in 1890 when she as about  16 years old to Murray County.   She never marred.   She and her siblings Nancy and Alice and Wesley lived in the Petty Home.  They farmed the land.

William Elijah Joseph Petty (1875 - 1935).  Elijah is a direct line so he and his wife  Viola Ridley have their section,.

Nancy Jane Petty (1877 - 1965).  Nancy was born in Fannin  County .  She moved  with her parents to Murray County in 1890 at about  age 13.  She never married.  She and  her siblings Alice and Wesley lived in the old Petty house and farmed the land.  She fell and broke her hip and to be put in a nurse home.

Dawson Wesley Petty (1879 - 1960).  Wesley was born in Fannin County, Georgia.  She moved  with his parents to Murray County, at about  age 11.  He and his sisters Nancy and Alice lived in the old Petty House and farmed the land.  We visited Alice, Nancy, and Wesley several times through the years.  Wesley had a horse in a gated  horse-fence area beside the barn.  He told me that was my horse.  I was pleased, luckily enough for everybody that I didn't decided to carry it home with me.  One time we had Sunday dinner with them.  The milk tasted horrible. It was bitter.  It was straight from the cow with no machines making it taste better.  On one of the visits while rambling around upstairs,  I found a shot gun  leaned up against a corner wall and a brown and white jug, just like I have seen cartoons of hillbillies use to hold their moonshine in.   I went down stairs to the room the family were visiting in making a fool of myself, I had the shotgun and the jug trying to sound like a hillbilly, little did I know I didn't have to try very hard.  In a blink of an eye Wesley hopped up and yanked the shotgun from me.  He said it was loaded.  That was embarrassing.
After Alice had died and Nancy  broke her hip and was put in nursing home Wesley lived there by himself.    One night the old two story house burned up with him it.  I  remember when my mother got the news she wept.

Ervin Petty (1882 - ? )  Ervin was born in Fannin County, Georgia,  and at about  age 8 moved to Murray County, Georgia, with his parents.  Jim married a lady who owned a boarding house in Detroit.
He had at least two children.  I head through my late uncle Roy Petty that Ervin had a daughter that ran away from home to be with a circus.

Cousins Stanley and Osmo Petty in Detroit

He had a son  named Stanley Petty who went with my uncle Osmo and my aunt Ruby to Detroit to find a job once.  After Stanley retired he travel a lot and dropped by to visit his cousins in Marietta several times.  Here is what I have about that:
Stanley visited his cousins in Marietta and Murray County, Georgia, several times.   One time he visit his cousin Carlton Petty who operated a huge productive farm.  Stanley left insulted because he said Carlton did not even get off his tractor while he was there.
On one of his visits to Marietta he had just returned from tourning the Holy Lands.  He wanted to tell his cousins what all he saw and each time he started they got into a fuss among themselves (typical).  Finally, giving up he got up to go and they saw him to the car and Janie asked him when would he be back and he said he didn't think he would be back.

Ervin Petty [2442], son of Daniel Webster Petty [163] and Sarah Jane Garrett [164], was born in 1882 and died on an unknown date.

Inez married McMichael [2447] [MRIN: 1047].

James M. "Jim" Petty (1882 - 1956).  Jim was born in Fannin County, Georgia, and moved with his parents to Murray County, Georgia, when he was about 8 as well.   I don't think Jim and Ervin were twins.  Jim was a farmer and an excellent horse trader.  He knew how to make money.  At age 21, he married Lillie Henry (1885-1983), age 16,in Murray County.
Jim & Lillie Petty

I got to talk to Lillie before she died  She was in her 90s with a sharp mind with a wit.  She was blind  but handled herself well with that handicap.  She told me that many years ago Jim's toes were frostbit.  She said his siblings had to hold him down while their cousin, Dr. Willis Garrett amputated the toes.

Daniel Webster and Sarah Jane Garrett Petty

Daniel Webster Petty (1843-1913), son of Elijah and Letty Lewis Petty, was born in North Carolina.  His mother died six year later and his father remarried and they  moved to Fannin County, Georgia.

Daniel grew up in Fannin County, Georgia along with four siblings and seven half siblings.
During the Civil War he enlisted  in the Confederate Army  Co B, , 65th Regiment, Ga. Infantry.

On 6 September 1873,  at age 29, in Fannin County, Georgia, he married 23 year old Sarah Jane Garrett (1850-1929), daughter of Joseph and Nancy Elizabeth Emily Mashburn Garrett.

My mother, as a child, knew not to get too close to their grandmother Nancy Mashburn Petty.  She would grab them and shake them.  They thought she was either mentally unstable or was prone to seizures because of diabetes.

They had six children, two girls and four boys.

Notations I have found on Daniel:

In 1881 he was named executor of his father's estate.  He declined.  He probably realized all the headaches involved.

3 Feb 1890, Daniel moved his family to Murray County, Georgia.  He was 46.  Apparently Petty  several families about the same time made their exodus from Fannin County to Murray County.

Interesting, although Fannin County and Murray County appear to be two different worlds with many miles apart there are not that many miles apart.   Fort Mountain, a huge mountain, separates the two counties.  Fannin County is hilly and mountainous;  Murray County  appears to be flat bottom lands, better for farming.

Fort Mountain is called Fort Mountain because of the huge boulders, some automobile size which serves as a fort that goes around the mountain in a unified manner.  The last I heard researchers were still trying to figure out how primitive Indians placed the huge boulders so skillfully on such a mountain angle or even hoist them up that high.

Daniel died at age 69 and Sarah Jane died at age 78.   They are buried  at Calvary Baptist Church, in Crandall, Murray County, Georgia.

Off-Springs of Obediah H. and Elizabeth Huey Tyson

Sisters Annie Tyson Crowder, Octavia "Tade" Tyson Carr, and Minnie Tyson Hunter

Ed and Will

Janie Tyson (1877-1880).  She died young.

Minnie Victoria Tyson (1879-1848).  Minnie and her husband Frank Paris Hunter have their own section.

Thomas Greenberry "Bud" Tyson (1882-1919).   Bud lived in Kennesaw.

Bud built what would be the building that houses the Confederate locomotive engine THE GENERAL as a storehouse building for grain.  But in time and re-adjusting and remodeling  the building the Civil War Museum in Kennesaw.  I'm sure it looks completely differently that when it was first built.

On 20 December 1908, Bud, at age 26, married Etta Hilderbrand, age 18..  They made their home in Kennesaw.   They had four children, 3 daughters and 1 son (the youngest).

He died at age  37.  His son was only 3 when his father died.  Etta also died young two years later, she was 30.

They are buried at Kennesaw City Cemetery.  I  think the children went to the Sandy Springs area to be raised by the Hilderbrand family.

William "Will" Obediah Tyson (1884-1979).  Will was a farmer and a land owner.

When my father was a teenager Will asked him did he want to come up to his farm and work the summer.  They agreed on how much Ed would be paid.  Will asked him did want to be paid weekly or for him to save it all for him and pay him in one big lump sum at the end of the summer.  Daddy, thinking ti would be easier to save for a big sum to buy a car if he didn't have to hold it, so it was agreed that his Uncle Will would keep the money for him.  At the end of the summer Daddy came to his Uncle Will and asked for his money.  Will said, in his own way  "Ed, I don't have any money to pay you.  With the depression going on people around here have been losing their land to the banks.  I have been buying up the land when it is put for auction, so I don't have any money left to pay you."  Daddy was so mad he walked back to Marietta, which was about a ten mile walk.

When I became interested in genealogy I went to visit Will with a tape recorder.    He was in the unpainted shack on Hwy 92 near Bells Ferry Road., he lived in most his adult life.   I think he slept at his daughters house but he stayed there alone during the day.  He was in his 90s and seemed to get around fine.   With all the land he hoarded and was developed he still prefer  his simple life.  It didn't seem  to matter to him what money could buy, but maybe just possession of it is all he wanted.  He told me about his farm life with his parents and siblings and mostly centered around working a millstone pulled a mule crushing cane.    That led to his mule.  He talked on and on about his mule.  Some of the things he remembered about the mule made him laugh and others things about the mule got his emotions stirred up.  He didn't seem to care about his siblings so much, but he told everything about the mule - who he bought it from, and who he sold it do years later.    I started one day and came the next day and finished.  He broke for lunch each day which was a can of meat  of some kind that he opened with a manual can opener,  after all, electric can openers were expensive.

Lela Octavia "Tade" Tyson (1886-1957).   Tade grew up and worked on the farm just like her siblings did.

I have seen pictures of Tade very dressed up at the Confederate Memorial Arch with other lades;  standing outside a store; standing by very ancient car (I'm not car expert).   When Lake Acworth, which is controlled by the City of Acworth made a beach we were some of its most frequent visitors.   While there we visited our Aunt Tade often.  She lived  just a few blocks from the beach.  Sometimes her house would be the drop off and pickup point.  What I am trying to say, I have no idea what she was like.

On 4 December 1928. at age 42, Tade married E.J Carr, age unknown.    They had no children.
