Mattie Brendle Fouts, 92, of Brendle Road, Franklin, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005, at her residence.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Robert David and Amy Ledford Brendle. She was married to Harold Fouts, who died in 1987. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, J.B., Frank, Wiley, Fred, Dee, Barnard and Robert; and three sisters, Vinnie, Minnie and Bessie.

She was a retired school teacher, having worked in the Macon County school system for 12 years and Transylvania school system for 25 years. She was a member of the N.C. Association of Retired Teachers and was the oldest member of Watauga Baptist Church, where she was a former piano player and Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by a sister, Maude Hopkins and husband Jay of Franklin; her sisters-in-law, Pauline Cable of Franklin and Jean Hunnicutt of Brevard; several nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Virginia Brendle and Tanya Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m., at Watauga Baptist Church with Revs. Wesley Price and Roy Lowe officiating.

Burial will be in Fouts Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Watauga Baptist Church deacons and senior adult Sunday school class.

The family received friends Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Fouts Cable, 95, daughter of the late David Clingman Fouts and Evelyn "Effie" Kimsey Fouts, died at her home on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007. She was born and died on the land settled by her Fouts family in the l830s.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Cable, who died in 1971; sister, Jean Fouts Hunnicutt and husband William L.; brothers, Harold Fouts and wife Mattie Brendle Fouts, J.L. Fouts and his first wife Frances Rhodes Fouts; sister-in-law, Polly Cable Reno and husband John; niece's husband, Bill Blower.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Hugh Krag of the home; her niece Linda Fouts Blower and her family; daughters, Angela Stites, Frances Stites Bennett and husband Mike and daughter Rea Lea; son, Aaron Stites and daughter Adrianna, all of Michigan; nephews and their families, Ron Hunnicutt and Jean Pierce Hunnicutt, daughter Lisa of Franklin and Atlanta: Larry Hunnicutt and Freda Stites Hunnicutt of Missouri; son, Keith of Kansas, Roger Hunnicutt of Brevard, son Charles of Asheville; John Reno and Jackie Shetley Reno, daughter Sarah, son Jay of Canton; her father's first cousin, Rebekah Ray May of Otter Creek, Nantahala Community; also, a special caregiver who became a "granddaughter," Kim Turpin of Franklin.

She leaves one first cousin in her Fouts family, Robert Fouts of Franklin, who is the last surviving grandchild of John Fouts and Rebecca Ray Fouts. She leaves several first cousins who are the children of her Aunt Alice Kimsey Welch and husband Wilburn and Aunt Myrtle Kimsey Roland and husband Arnold.

Pauline was a member of the Iotla Baptist Church. She taught adult women in Sunday school for several years. She was a retired teacher. She taught 43 years in the Macon County School System. She was a graduate of Western Carolina College (WCU now, and when she began, Western Carolina Teacher College). She began her career in a one- teacher school in the Nantahala Gorge. She then taught at Kyle Elementary School (Nantahala Lake was built during that time) and at Otter Creek Elementary. She finished her teaching years at Cullasaja School, retiring in 1977.


She loved her home and the land and was an avid gardener. She leaves a treasured friend from childhood who lives across meadows from her, Nell Duvall Welch. Their summers were times of comparing the growth of each of their vegetable and flower gardens plus advising each other on the fine art of growing.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home, with Revs. Steve Reeves and Vic Greene officiating.

Burial will be in the Fouts Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Macon Funeral Home.

Jean Fouts Hunnicutt

Jean Fouts Hunnicutt, 84, of Brevard, and formerly of Franklin, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005.

A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late David Clingman Fouts and Evelyn "Effie" Kimsey Fouts. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Hunnicutt; and two brothers, Harold and J.L. Fouts.

She is survived by three sons, Ron Hunnicutt of Atlanta, Ga., David Larry Hunnicutt of St. Roberts, Mo., and Roger Hunnicutt of Brevard; one sister, Pauline Fouts Cable of Franklin; three grandchildren, Lisa Hunnicutt of Atlanta, Keith Hunnicutt of Missouri and Charles Hunnicutt of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Hunnicutt and Martha Hunnicutt of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Reeves officiated.

Burial was in the Wells Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m., on Monday, at the funeral home prior to the service.

C. Lofton Fouts Jr, 76, of Douglasville, Ga., passed away Friday, April 11, 2008.

He was born Sept. 6, 1931, in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Annie Ruby White Fouts and C. Lofton Fouts Sr.

He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and member of Delta Sigma Pi. Mr. Fouts served as immediate past chair of Douglas Wellstar Regional Hospital Board; trustee Douglas Wellstar Hospital Authority; past chairman Douglas County Rotary Club; currently serving as a board member with Douglasville Planning Zoning Board; past chairman of Douglas County Republican Party Executive Board; currently serving as 2nd vice chairman of Douglas County Republican Party Executive Board.

Earlier in his life he served as president of Junior Chamber of Commerce in Raleigh; chairman of the Miss Raleigh Pageant; active in Young Republicans of North Carolina. He worked with Cessna Aircraft Corporation as South Eastern Manger for Multi Engine Sales, vice president Partenavia North America and most recently owns the largest FBO (fixed base operations) broker of Eastern United States and continued until his death.

Mr. Fouts logged thousands of hours as a private pilot, carried ratings and certifications as a private and commercial instrument rated multi engine and as an instructor. He continued to fly his personal airplane until his death.

He previously worked for Pure Oil Company, owner of Raleigh, NC FBO municipal airport and Piper Aircraft of Lockhaven, Pa. He served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer in Korea and Japan.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Fouts of Douglasville; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindie and Phil Sweet of Alpharetta, Ga., Kimberly and Jack Tidwell of Douglasville, and Tara and Michael Nettie of Douglasville; five grandchildren Kelcie, Ansley, Abigail, Lofton and Joshua Tidwell; three stepgrandchildren, Meghan, Jonathan and Kevin Sweet; brother, Jerry Fouts of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; an uncle, Robert Fouts of Franklin; and many extended family members.

The funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, April 15, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Douglasville, with Rev. Max Caylor officiating.

Burial will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 17, at Fouts Cemetery in Franklin.

The family received friends Sunday, April 13, and Monday, April 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home.

Ethel Fouts, 87, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.

She had been a resident of Fox Run Community in Novi, former resident of Henry Ford Village in Dearborn and of Hazel Park and Franklin. She was born in Asheville.

Mrs. Fouts worked in retail at Sears Roebuck at both the Highland Park and Oakland Mall stores. She was a proficient retail representative and had many friends and customers. She worked with, rather than arguing and tried to make sure everyone was happy. She was also the lady who always saw the bright side, never complaining, even during her illness.

Mrs. Fouts was a devoted and proud mother and grandmother and she was always involved with people, and had many friends and confidants. She liked to be with people and to help them. Her life was devoted to helping others.

She had numerous friends at Henry Ford Village and Fox Run Community, where she participated in many and various activities. She was also frequently involved in her church's activities.


Mrs. Fouts worked hard to help pay for her children's college education and to take care of her family. She was very proud of their educational accomplishments, including her daughter's doctorate.

She was married to the late Vance C. Fouts, former City Manager of Hazel Park

She is survived by a son, James Fouts, Warren Council President; a daughter, Dr. Joyce Fouts; son-in-law, Dr. Michael Bugenski, for whom Mrs. Fouts had a great deal of respect and love; a grandson whom she was very proud of, Alex Spresser, who was an honor student and 2006 graduate of Birmingham Groves High School, currently a freshman at Western Michigan University; and close friend, Tom.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m., at Fouts Cemetery.

Vance, Blanton, and Roy; and two sisters, Revena Smith and Lura Mae Dietz; as
well as his wife of 41 years, Margaret Fisk Fouts; his first wife of 25 years,
Mildred; and daughter, Jaynet Fouts Workman.

He is survived by his
daughter, Virginia Smith and husband Robert of Highlands; granddaughter, Anna
Smith Vickers (Jon), Knoxville, TN; grandson, Mark Smith, Tulsa, OK; 8
great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends; and special friend,
Walt Coddall.

Robert was a member of Iotla Baptist Church, a former
Panther Football player and life long Panther fan. Square dancing, organizing
and encouraging Fouts Family Reunions, and caring for the Fouts Cemetery in
Iotla were highlights of his retirement after working in Michigan for many
years. His most notable job during WWII was the Manhattan Project in Detroit,
building part of the atomic bomb.

The family will receive friends from 6
to 8 p.m., Friday, April 1, at Macon Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 2, at
Macon Funeral Home. The Rev. Stacy Woods and Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.
Burial will be in the Fouts Cemetery.

Roy Herbert Fouts

Roy Herbert Fouts, 83, of Franklin, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2005.

A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late Hamilton Fouts and Rosa Downs Fouts. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Vance, Buford, Blanton, Lofton and Cyrus; two sisters, Laura Mae Dietz and Revena Smith.

He was a Franklin High School graduate and a graduate of Cecil's Business School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. After leaving the Army, he worked at the Pentagon for two years. He then returned to Macon County and started in the mica mine industry and was a consultant for the mining industry. He later started Blue Ridge Tank Company and was in the LP gas business. He was a real estate broker and appraiser; an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as deacon and Sunday school teacher; a member of Junaluskee Masonic Lodge; a member of the Franklin Rotary Club, member of the Catamount Club of Western Carolina University; member of the FHS Booster Club; and a loyal member of the Democratic Party. He was a pilot and served as first lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Beeco Fouts; three daughters, Linda Brogden and husband Mack, Marlene Barham and husband Kyle, and Darlene McDowell and husband Bill, all of Franklin; two sons, Steve Fouts and wife Elena of Asheville and Terry Fouts and wife Mariah of Colorado; one brother, Robert Fouts and wife Margaret of Franklin; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 3:30 p.m., at First Baptist Church. Rev. Harold Ball and Shawn Edwards will officiate.

Burial will be in the Fouts Cemetery.

The family received friends Monday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Macon Funeral Home.

Lillian was a U.S. veteran of the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and was a member of First Baptist Church. She loved square dancing, raising roses and gardening; and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by five children, Linda Brogden and husband Mack of Franklin, Marlene Barham and husband Kyle of Alabama, Darlene McDowell and husband Bill of Franklin, Steve Fouts and wife Elena of Asheville and Terry Fouts of Colorado; brother, Bob Beeco and wife Doris of Commerce, Ga.; sister, Mildred Willis of Decatur, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 28, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home, with Revs. Wesley Price and Jerry Willis officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery alongside her twin brother, Bill. The family received friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Monday, prior to the service.

Pallbearers were Joel Bragg, Brandon McDowell, Dustin Brogden, Mike Contino, Greg Otey, Michael Peek, and Eric Hendrix.
