Tony'a Retirement

Tony's last day at work at the Post Office.
Tony was the one that mostly answered the phone when he worked at Sprayberry Crossing Posr Office and before then, Gresham Road Post Office., both in Marietta.  I overheard him many times say when someone asked him for directions how to get there, "Do you know where the Big Chicken is?

Tony, Sheila, and Bob.  Sheila and I worked in Finance Department of Atlanta Post Office.  Bob and I also worked under the same boss in the Atlanta Post Office.  Years of working with Bob in Atlanta, and a couple of years of working with him in the Marietta Post Office one day he and I were standing in front of the battery display at K-Mark.  Bob, finally spoke to me, saying, "Do you work for the Post Office?"  Years later, after we both retired, I ran into him again in the recovering room of a hospital.  My sister was recovering and so was Bob.  Bob treated me like we were best fiends.

Little Officer Mac

This is my friend and ex-coworker Mac.  This was taken July 4th,  2004.  We are both retired .  I ran into him at the post office the other day (almost 14 years later) and he looks exactly the same.

Mac has his eccentric ways.  One time someone brought donuts in from Duncan Donuts.  She was  not sure what to get, so she one bought one of every flavor.  Mac could not decide which one he wanted, so he took a bite out of each one…. Which stirred everybody up.

Mac is a highly decorated military officer.  He was an officer involved in the capture of Panama’s Noreiga.

He kept up his status in the reserves, which he was an officer, of course.  Once I was on break in the break room and a vending machine man was there filling the machines with goodies.  Mac walked by the door and recognized the vender.  He, at the time, was in his reserve unit.  Mac walked in and greeted the guy, and the guy almost snapped to attention.  He addressed Mac as “sir”. And was carried away with the fact he got a one on one with a hero and an officer in his unit..

Then another “Mac” , our supervisor walked by the door and saw Mac talking to the vending machine man.  Mac ruefully told Little Officer Mac he was on the clock, get back to work.
I think that was a downer for worker/officer Mac’s underling.

Mr and Mrs Nalls

I was a timekeeper at the Atlanta Post Office for about a dozen years.  One of my duties was to make a record of people late and have them sign a form recognizing they were late.

On Uncle John's Bathroom Calendar for the 13th of this month had a list of actual excuses people told for being late.  One of them was, "My husband thinks it's funny to hide my keys before he goes for work."

That reminded me of Mrs. Nalls.  She was late fairly often and each time on her slip she had to sign the reason she was late was some antic her husband pulled on her.  The excuse that stands out in my mind is one time, just as she got ready for work her husband slipped up and poured a bucket of water on her.

It was not my job to judge workers with attendance problems.  I just recorded them.  But to myself I thought her husband was getting a lot of blame she wa making up.

That was before one day her supervisor noticed a stranger working in his area and didn't know what he was doing.  He was rolling hampers of mail backward and forward and placing the tubs someplace else which caused a mass confustion.  After the supervisor questioned the stranger he learned that it was Mr. Nalls, who didn't work at the post office.

After that I beleived her excuses.  However, after months of tardiness problems they let her go.  Sad.

Small World, again.

We went to a concert last night on the Marietta Square.  We were to meet a friend.  The friend arrived before we did and saved two more places beside her for us.

Before we arrived another couple wanted those two places and our friend would not let them sit.  I do not know what words were exchanged, but I think they were heated.  The two people that wanted the seats sat over to the side.

We arrived and the man of the two that wanted our places immediately recognized me.  We worked together for years at the Marietta Post Office.   He told me retired in 2009.  Small world.
