Children of Jason Henderson Hunter
Jason Henderson Hunter's Children.
Jason Henderson Hunter's children are divided by several
wives and lovers. I will try to keep
them in chronological order.
Jason Davis (abt 1839-1862) was an illegitimate son of Jason
Henderson Hunter and Catherine
Davis. Catherine sued Jason for Bastardy
and won. Jason Davis was born in 1839
and killed on the Battlefield of Manassa, Virginia, 25 March 1862. He was about 23 years old.
Seth Davis (abt 1842 - ?
) was also an illegitimate son of Jason Henderson Hunter and Catherine
Davis. Again, Catherine sued for Jason for Bastardy and
won. Apparently Jason didn't learn a
lesson the first time. The fate of Seth
is unknown.
William A. Trammell/Hunter.
William was the fruit of Jason
Henderson Trammell/Hunter and Rebecca
Trammell. William is an ancestor and has
his own section.
Jason Henderson Hunter and his first wife had the following
children:
Margaret Eunice J. Hunter (abt 1845 - ?
). Is Margaret the same as the Margaret that is the daughter of Emma the slave?
Andrew John Hunter (1846
- 1896). John
and his wife Amanda raised his late sister Mary's daughters Margaret and Ida
Mae Julian. They were considered very
austere guardians. Apparently, they
could not accept Mary's late husband (John Julian) being Jewish.
John
Julian cultivated a ranch in Idaho.
Apparently, John Hunter kept the proceeds from the sale of the ranch
after his brother-in-law died, not handing it down to the proper heirs Margaret
and Ida Mae. He lived about 50 years and
is buried in the Gainesville City Cemetery, Gainesville, Greene County, Ar.
Clarissa E. Hunter (abt 1849 - ?
). 1870 Greenville County, AR,
Census, under occupation she is listed as "Taking care of father".
Eliza A. Hunter (abt 1854 - ?
). Born in Bollinger County,
Missouri.
Mary F. Hunter (abt 1856
- abt 1881). It is not known for sure which daughter of Jason and
Elizabeth Hunter is Margaret Hunter's mother.
It is probably Mary, because of according to Gladys Warren Willis,
Margaret's mother married early. There fore,it is likely that Margaret's mother
is probablyMary. Mary may be the most
likely, because she was eighteen when Margaret was born.
Margaret's mother died when Margaret was only six years old and her
sister, Ida Mae was only four. Margaret
(and presumably also her sister Ida Mae) went to live with, and were raised by,
her Uncle John and Aunt Amanda.
- David Willis, 1999
Mary married John C.
Julian. John was born in Kentucky and
apparently died in Idaho. John was
Jewish and owned a big ranch in Idaho.
Margaret Canzadia Julian (1874-abt 1957). Margaret was born in Greene County, Ark and
died in Corpus Christi, Texas. She live
about 83 years. Margaret married Judd
Peter Warren (1871-1948). Judd was born
in Illinois and died in Uvalde, Texas.
Judd worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad, the same as his brothers. He lived 76 years. They had one daughter.
Ida Mae Jullian
Ida Mae Julian (1876 -
? ).
She was living in
San Francisco the last the family heard from her. She married Rozelle Julienne. The surname is ironically close in sound and
spelling as Ida Mae's. They had one son.
.
This is guesswork: In
1845 Jason borrowed money from Nicolas Woofin of Buncombe County, North
Carolina. He had to put up belongings as
collateral. An agent came to Jason's
home to list his property. Included in
his property were three slaves. A dark-skinned
woman named Emma, 27 years old and her child yellow complexion named John, 4
years old, and another child.
Dark skin mother and a yellow complexion child? Yellow complexion seems to insinuate that
John had a white father. And he was born
in about 1841, which was just before Seth Davis and William A. Trammell was
born.
And another child
name Margaret , age one. No reference
was made to Margaret's complexion, which I assume it was normally black, not
"yellow". Which is interesting
because listed as one of Jason's children on the 1850 Census of Macon County,
is a child named Margaret that was 5 years old at the time they were
enumerated, which is very close to the age of Margaret, the daughter of Emma
the Slave.
It is believed that Jason's second wife's name was Mary. They had
2 children:
James T. Hunter (1865-1919).
James was born in Arkansas and died in Osawatomie, , Kn, at age 54. He
married Mary Nowell.
Secondly, he married Mary E. Horn, 20 May 1888, in Greene County, Arkansas, he
was age 23.
They had one daughter.
Changed named to James T. Wright because RR strike
in Osawatomie, Kansas. He was fired as a
striker with the name James T. Hunter.
He changed his name to James T. Wright and was hired again. He raised his family using their surname as
Wright also.
Osawatomie, Kansas, was home to John Brown who, with
his sons, with their raids, were beleived partially responsible for the start
of the Civil War.
One night in the early 1980s I got a phone call from
a man staying at a motel in town and he wanted to see me about James T. Hunter
changing is name to James T. Wright to keep his name because of the railway
strike. I went to his motel room. He was an elderly tall man who looked as if he worked hard farming the land all his
life . His had his wife and grandson
with him. He was James T. Hunter's great
grandson. He wanted to know if I knew
why he changed his name other than what I had,: to get his job back. No, I didn't.
He said when James T. changed his names he also left his wife and started over with her. A new name, a new beginning. I told him I had to be at work in about an
hour, I could drop by the next morning and talk some more. He said no, they would be on their way to
Florida by the time I got off..
William T. Hunter (1866 -
? ). William was born in Arkansas and that is all
I have.
Thirdly, Jason Henderson Hunter married Sarah Jordan. I think Sarah's maiden name Jordan, but that was her previous married
name because he came in the marriage with a daughter with the last name
Jordan. She was born in Tennessee.
They had 5 children,
4 sons and 1 daughter:
Jason Henderson "Samp" Hunter, Jr. (abt 1873-1920). He was born in Arkansas and died in
Osawatomie, , Kansas. He lived about 47
years. Samp married Lizzy and they had 3
children, 2 sons and 1 daughter.
Samp married a second time to Unknown (Unknown to us).
Minnie T. Hunter (1875 -
? ). Minnie was born in Arkansas and we have no
more information about her.
General Robert Lee Hunter (1876 - abt 1936). I wonder what he went by? General?
Robert? Bob? Lee? He was born in
Arkansas and about 60 years later he
died in Maldon, , Mo. He married
Vola Davis (abt 1880-1822. Viola lived
about 42 years.
They had 4 sons.
Avis Johnson " Hop" Hunter (abt 1879 - abt 1954). Hop was born in Arkansas and died in
Craighead, Arkansas. He and his unknown
wife had one sone.
Andrew Miller Hunter (1881 - 1950 ). This is the second son of Jason named
Andrew. Usually when I see a child named the same as
a sibling it would mean the first child by that name has died. Not so in this case, his brother Andrew was
alive. This Andrew lived about 69
years. He married Nora Emily Davis (1890 - 1972), She lived about 82 years. They are buried at Oaklawn Cemetery, along with their
daughter and grandchildren. I found
their plot.
They had one daughter.
