John and Nancy Sumner Ray and Their Children

John and Nancy Sumner Ray's House

John Ray and Nancy Sumner Ray  and their Children.

John Ray (1813 - 1903)  John was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, and died in Macon County, North Carolina.  His parents were an Unknown Ray and Margaret "Peggy" Fouts.   Unknown Ray was born in Germany.

By trade John was a wagon maker and farmer.

The territory of Macon County and portions of Jackson and Swain Counties were acquired by treaty from the Cherokee Indians in 1817-1819 and was incorporated into Haywood County which had been formed from Buncombe County in 1808.  In the spring of 1820 the State of North Carolina sent several companies of surveyors into the area and surveyed the survey of lands went rapidly.  When the work was completed and auction of the lands were held in Waynesville in September 1820, and later sales were held in Franklin.  Settlement of the town of Franklin and the Tennessee River Valley began at once.  But it wasn't until the 1828-1829 session of the General Assembly in Raleigh, N.C. that an act was passed to create at new county and the name of Macon was given it in honor of Nathaniel Macon, Speaker of the House and a N.C. senator.

John F. Ray and his wife, Nancy Sumner Ray, with two young children, Henry, age three, and Naomi, and one year old, one year old, came to this new county in 1835 and settled in the Oakdale-Burningtown section.

This section was very hilly and heavily forested and had to be cleared of trees to have land for farming.   They grew their crops on these hillsides for there was very little flat land.  The plentiful timber supplied the needs of logs for building, heating and cooking.

By 1850, John had 30 acres of improved land, which was much acreage for it had been cleared from the forest lands, and 75 acres remained unimproved.   At the time of the 1850 Census was taken John had 3 horses, 3 cows, and 20 swine.  Through the years John acquired more acreage until by 1880 he had 230 cares with 50 improved with 2 acres of apple orchard. He improved his property and acquired more livestock to include 4 work oxen, a mule, sheep, and cattle.  Horses were seldom used for farm work, only for riding and pulling wagons and buggies.   He grew Indian corn, wheat, oats, rye, peas, sweet and Irish potatoes.  They had bees to supply honey, which provided much of the sweetener for cooking, and beeswax for candles.
John was a wagon maker and the sons helped with this as well as the farm work.

Church records show that John Ray was baptized January 8, 1860.

John Ray sold his land holdings to his son, J. Frank Ray, on April 4, 1885 for $400.00  In the transaction was 25 acres near the gap of the mountain at the head of Iotla Creek, 45 acres, part of the Guyer tract, and 76 acres on Burningtown Creek, District 17, Tract 52.  John probably continued to live in the home after the sale for J. Frank Ray and his wife did not sell this land until January 17, 1894.  They sold the land to John Baldwin lands adjoining Ephriam Tallent and Thomas Ledford in District 17, except some of the tract (25 acres) that had been conveyed to Riley Jones and Zachariah Downs, February 27, 1886.  This is recorded in Book CC - page 425, Macon County Register of Deeds.  Allie Ray Baldwin, wife of John Baldwin, was the granddaughter of John Ray, and he spent time with the family in later years.

At the time of his death he was living in the home of his son, J. Frank Ray, in Franklin.  His funeral service and burial were at the Burningtown Baptist Church.  There are no markers for the graves of John and Nancy Sumner Ray.

Editorial in Franklin Press:
In the death of Jesse Ray, Macon County loses a lovable and colorful figure.  His passing, too, underscores a great change in intellectual approach that has taken place in the last half-century.
In today's highly practical world, both the individual student and the men who fix educational policies are more and more inclined to ask of any bit of knowledge: "Is it immediately useful?"  If not, it is likely to be ignored.
That was not always true.  There was a time, and not so long ago, when knowledge - any knowledge - was prised for knowledge's sake; and Mr. Ray's keen intellectual curiosity typified the attitude for knowledge that marked so many of his generation.
In Macon County, at least, it was not uncommon for a man or woman of little formal schooling to be possessed of a great store of information - on history, or geography, or religion, or minerals, or any one of score of other subjects; some of them read the encyclopedia,  not to find a single bit of information on a particular subject, but for the pleasure and enlightment.  They not only took pride in their knowledge; it was a source of intellectual satisfaction in a day when amusements were rare indeed.

"I visited Susie in the nursing home in Bryson City not too long before her death and asked her questions about family history.  Her mind was sharp, but her hearing and eyesight was bad.  She was reeling off names of her grandparents, etc., and seemed to remember a lot.  Then I asked her about her Jason (her husband) and where he came from.  She said, "I don't rightly know where he came from - I think it was Alabamy." I found out later that they were first cousins and I am sure she knew that but she didn't want me to know it.  I was very much amused by this. She was a good person, and I thought a lot of her". - Lucy MCGHEE

Also preceding her in death was an infant daughter, Betty Lou; six brothers, Frank, Ralph, Howard, Bill, Edgar, Fred, and Kenneth; three sisters, Eula Welch, Lucy Catway, and Adibell Stanley; one son-in-law, Robert (RL) Crawford; and one grandson, Jerry Alan Hubbell.

Survivors include two sisters, Muriel Welch of the old home place, and Joanna Hedrick and husband John of Charlotte; and two brothers, Paul and wife Louise of Franklin and Lewis and wife Peggy of Jefferson City, Tenn. Maude has three surviving children, Charles Baldwin of the home, Thelma Crawford of Sylva, and Nell Hubbell and husband Clarence of Sylva.

Grandchildren by Thelma include Bob Crawford and wife Angie of Sylva, and Linda Robinson and husband John of Charleston, S.C. Grandchildren by Nell include Sharon Davis and husband Carl of Webster, Rebecca Barr and husband Bill of Franklin, and Elizabeth Medford and husband Mitchell of Austin, Texas. Her very special great-grandchildren include Caleb Crawford, Sarah Barr, and Matthew Barr. She had numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends, all of whom were treasured.

Maude started teaching school at age 16 in Aquone. Some students in the "primer" were older than she was. After marriage and children, she resigned and worked as a seamstress from her home and from a shop in Franklin. Some of her friends still have wedding gowns and dresses made by her more than 50 years ago. At age 55, she was employed by Belk's of Franklin as a sales associate and buyer of domestics. After retiring at age 66, she continued to work part-time until age 80. She also volunteered at Maco Crafts.

Maude attributes her 104 years as a blessing from the Lord, serving others, and a lot of hard work that began many years age when she took care of her siblings and toiled on the farm. Through the present time, she has continued enjoying life, sewing her treasured little aprons, doing household chores and showering joy, happiness, and gifts on all those around her. Maude loved her 1963 Chevy Nova, which she drove until age 93, as well as her black cat "Inkey", which she had for 18 years. She brought a ray of sunshine to all who knew her. Those who were blessed by knowing her will always remember her kind, caring, and gentle spirit.

A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home in Franklin at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 5, with pastors Harold Ball, Radford Penland and Jim Dusek officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Determined to quit his lone bachelor way
And change the mode of his rollicking life,

He settled upon Miss Josephine Fouts.
