John Hunter (c1775-- 1848) and His Descendants
John Hunter (abt 1775 - 1848) was born in Rutherford County,
North Carolina, and died in Union County, Georgia. I have no direct exact proof who his parents
are but I think they were probably
William and Anna Caldwell Hunter.
They had a son named John in
about the same time slot that has not been accounted for.
On the same thought
we have no idea who is wife was.
Someone suggested it may be Mary Polly Edwards and I don't have
any proof she is not, So, unless we come
across information that points
otherwise, we will consider her as the likely Mrs. John Hunter. John lived in the Buncombe/Henderson Counties
area where he made whiskey for a lively hood.
When the state of North Carolina decided to impose a whiskey making tax
on the distillers that made it, John and his family uprooted and moved to Union
County, Georgia, where there was no whiskey distilling tax.
About 1835, They settled in the Chostoe* District of Union
County, near the foot of Blood Mountain.
It is said that John and his sons were busy fighting the Indians (whose
property they took), clearing the land, building cabins, and of course
attending the distillery.
John's oldest son Andrew made trips to Augusta, Georgia,
with a wagon loaded of whiskey.
Gold was discovered in near
Dahlonega , which was also in the north Georgia Mountains. Thus, the saying, "Thar's gold in them
thar hills!" was originated. With
gold to mine there were property and treaties issues. President Andrew Jackson solved the white
man's problem by ordering the Indians of that area removal to mostly
Oklahoma. The bill was signed in 1830
but was not completed to 1838-39.
John's sons Andrew and Jason joined the Army and helped with
the removal, which sadly became known as "The Trail of Tears" and was
dramatized with the Cherokee Indian outside play, "UNTO
THESE HILLS".
I think John was sick in his last few years and his
daughter Martha lived with him and cared
for him.
In the late 1980s or early 1990s my two sons and I went
to John's cabin. I was surprised just how small it was. The whole inside of the cabin was smaller
than a normal size family room or den.
Interesting, there was a big rock fireplace and the big rocks jutted
out. Winding around some of the jutted
out rocks was a large snake skin. It
molted and went on its way.
We think his wife died years before John. John lived about 73 years and is buried at Old Salem Church
Cemetery in an unmarked grave. John
donated and deeded the land for the
cemetery. The cemetery is on top of a small mountain or a large hill,
across from where his cabin once sat.
The last I heard Charles Hunter owns John Hunter's cabin,
disassembled. It is disassembled with
the planks and boards numbered. The
people that own the land now wanted it removed, bulldozed away. Charles stepped forward to buy it, he had it
taken apart board by board. Then the
plans were to reassemble it at the Choestoe Old School Museum.
John Hunter and Mary Polly Edwards (or his unknown wife)
had eight children, 4 daughters and 4 boys:
Andrew M. Hunter (abt 1799 - 1848).
Elizabeth Hunter (1799 - 1845).
James W. Hunter (1805 -
? ).
Martha Hunter (1810 - abt 1860).
Rebecca Hunter (1812 - 1898).
William Johnson Hunter (1813 - 1899).
Jason Henderson Hunter (abt 1817 - abt `1885).
Harriet E. Hunter (1821 - aft 1900).
*In Cherokee language Choseto means "dancing
rabbits".
Andrew M. Hunter (abt 1799 - 27 February 1848). Andrew was born in North Carolina and died in
Prote, Mexico.
Andrew, via wagon, would haul
whiskey to Augusta, Georgia, the closest market, to sell for his father John
Hunter.
In 1836, the Georgia Militia was
formed "to protect the citizens from Indians." John and his brother Jason are on the roster
rolls that first year in 1836, which extended into the infamous "Trail of
Tears". Andrew evidently stayed in the service. Twelve years later he died as a 2nd Lt in
Perote, Mexico, from wounds he received in the Mexican War.
Note The Mexican War (1846 1848) was a war
between, of course, The United States and Mexico, over mainly border
disputes. The bulk of the war was in the
Rio Grande area, which was commanded by future President Zachary Taylor. The United States gained Texas, parts of
California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The treaty was signed 2 February 1848, twenty
five days before Andrew M. HUNTER died.
Although wounded, if conscious, he lived to see his side win.
He lived about 49 years.
Elizabeth Hunter (1799 - 1875). Elizabeth was born in North
Carolina. She married Joseph Lance (1809-1879). Note:
Joseph stayed on the French Broad River to farm.
Elizabeth lived 75 years and Joseph lived 69 years.
They are both buried in New Salem Cemetery, Skyland, North Carolina.
They had four sons:
John Andrew "Darb" Lance (1837-1905).
Fidelia A. Lance (1841 - ? ).
James K.P. Lance (1846-1856).
Thomas R. Lance (
? - 1901).
Martha Hunter (1810 - abt 1860).
he lived in the original John HUNTER House. She apparently took care of John Hunter (her father) until his death.
Harriett HUNTER ENGLAND and her Husband Daniel England and their kids moved in w/her after her father John Hunter died.
She never married.
Rebecca Hunter (1812 - 1898).

John Hunter [850] was born about 1836 in , , NC
and died on an unknown date.
General Notes: Possibly, this
John HUNTER lived in Macon County, North Carolina, the same county, as his
uncle Jason HUNTER was living at the time, in 1848, but John was not around in
1850 for the Census. From the records:
"William J. HUNTER of Union County, Georgia, to John A. HUNTER of Macon
County, nephew of said William for natural love & affection, a Negro boy
slave, Samuel, 20 years old; also one wagon & yoke of steers.
20 Oct 1848".
However, this John HUNTER would have been
about twelve years old in 1848, but he is the only John HUNTER, grandson of
John HUNTER, that would near fit. If
this was the John HUNTER in question, and he, in 1848 was twelve, quiet
possibly, his whole family was living in Macon County, North Carolina.

Rebecca Hunter (1812 - 1898).

[46] and Polly Edwards [47], was born in 1812 in , , NC,
died in 1898 at age 86, and was buried in N.C. Methodist Cem., Hayesville, NC.
Rebecca married Samuel Riley
Lance [857] [MRIN: 420], son of John M.
Lance [858] and Sarah Ann Murray

Hayesville, NC. They had 12 children: John Henry, James H. "Jim,"
Sarah, Harriet, Margaret, Emaline E., Louisa, William Andrew, George Ann, Josefine,
Samuel Debarris, and Mary V..
Marriage Notes: Their oldest son
was born in North Carolina, about 1834, and the next son was born in Georgia
about 1836. From this, we assume that
they arrived in Georgia about 1835 or 1836, about the same time that Rebecca's
father John HUNTER arrived in Georgia, along with other HUNTER family members.
They returned to North Carolina about 1844 (their 6th child was born in NC),
but returned to Georgia about 1845 (their 7th child was born in Ga.)
Rev John Henry Lance [860] was born about 1834 in ,
Buncombe Co, NC, died on 16 Feb 1890 in , Union Co, GA1 about age 56, and was buried in Old Salem
Cemetary, Union Co., GA.
General Notes: John Henry Lance
moved to Union County, Georgia, when he was six years old.
John grew to adulthood in Union County,
and was always ready participant in the rough and tumble games of the mountain
boys. He earned a reputation of being one
of the toughest individuals in Choestoe and seldom lost a fight. The tenacity of his fighting spirit would
accept defeat and in the end he prevailed.
He was fearless and it is reputed that he would "look a wild cat in
the eye and then spit in its face". John readily took to drinking mountain
'shine but it only drove him into committing more boisterous acts, which
further added to his reputation.
But something good happened to John when
he married Caroline Turner, the daughter of Jarrett Turner in 1857. He settled down, laid the old ways aside and
started rearing a family.
He farmed and they lived in a small cabin
alongside Lance Creek at the foot of Lance Mountain. John taught himself to read, write, and
sometimes later became a Methodist minister.
John remembered how he acted when he was drinking, so regardless of his
text he always got around to condemning the practice and he always spiced his
sermons with a multitude of "amen, amen, amen."
Rev. John was preaching at Hoods Chapel, a
church some five miles from his house.
On the trail leading from his
house to the church, Tom Swain and Fred Cannup had set up a "wildcat
still" in plain view of all who traveled the trail. They were openly flaunting the law and
corrupting the good name of Choestoe, so Rev. John called on them at their
illicit place of business and demanded that they cease their operation. Threats were tossed about as to what would
happen if anyone or anything interfered in their business.
A short time later on February 17th 1889,
Rev. John Lance preached at Hoods Chapel.
He chose as a text, Matthew 25, verses' 1-13, the parable about the
virgins. It has been passed down that he
preached with a fury like he might have some sort of premonition about the
death and he was afraid that he might have much more time to speak out on this
evil. He closed with "watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the
hour when the Son of Man cometh".
On the way home, he passed the home of Tom
Swain where a crowd had gathered and were having a drinking party. The crowd started taunting Rev. Lance by
saying mockingly "amen, amen, amen".
Rev. Lance wasn't intimidated by this drunken crowd and he kept on
walking. They became so enraged that
some of them took a near cut, went straight over the ridge and hid behind a big
fir tree that was adjacent to Wolf Creek.
When Rev. Lance came by they brutally assaulted him. His neck was cut almost entirely around and
was held on by only small strip of flesh.
The wind pipe was completely severed and the rest of his body was
covered with a multitude of deep cuts and stabs. He was so mutilated that T.J. Butt, a member
of the coroner's jury remarked that he "had never seen such a fiendish
attack."
Jim Lance, the second oldest son, lead the
posse that hunted down the murderers.
Tom Swain's sons, Frank and Newt were arrested for this brutal murder
but only Frank was found guilty and he was given a sentence of Life
imprisonment. He served thirteen years
before he was paroled. Frank Swain went directly to Tolar, Texas, and never
dared come back to Union Co., for the rage that consumed Jim Lance had not
abated one iota.
This murder indirectly touched every
citizen of Union Co., and directly changed the llife of the Lance family.

Samuel Debarris Lance [970] was born in 1851, died on an
unknown date, and was buried in N.C. Methodist Cem., Hayesville, NC.
General Notes: Samuel had
naturally curly hair.
In the Civil War he was wounded
in the line of duty. He was holding a
stallion during drill and was kicked in the right leg. The wound never entirely healed.
As a young man he traveled to
Missiouri with his friend and companion, Sid Wright. He staked out a claim for many acres of land,
which he never returned to farm.
Samuel Debarris was called
"Debarris" by family and friends probably to differentiate him from
his father Samuel Riley which was mostly called "Riley.
Debarris was a very young Confederate
soldier. He was serving under General Lee at Ringgold Ga. He was holding the
horses and was struck in the leg by a large stallion with a wound that never
fully healed. He has a confederate gravestone at his grave in Hayesville, NC at
the Hayesville United Methodist Cemetery. There is a record that he applied for
and got a disability pension in 1925 before he died in 1929 for his service in
the Confederate military. His wife Malinda Davenport Lance continued to draw
the pension of about twenty-five dollars a month after his death.
In spite of his injury,Debarris lived a
very colorful and productive life. He was a tall impressive figure with brown
curly hair.
His first marriage was to Tennessee Elizabeth
Anderson and they produced a large family of eight to ten children. They began
their marriage in Union County, Ga. but moved to Clay County, Hayesville,NC,
when it may have still been called Fort Hembree for the fort that was built
there to gather up the peaceful local Indians and send them on the tragic
"Trail of tears". Debarris and his brother, "Andy" Lance
helped built the original courthouse at what is now Hayesville, NC. They did
the brick and mortor work on it and liked to tell how they walked the comb of
the peak of the roof to celebrate it's completion. "Cap" Anderson had
won the bid to build the courthouse and they were working with him.
Sadly, his wife Tennessee died in
childbirth, giving life to her son, Charlie.
After Debarris lost his first
wife, He married the very young Malinda Elizabeth Davenport. Malinda was
staying with a mother that had given birth and needed assistance near Fort
Hembree. Debarris then started another family of ten children. Their names in

General Notes: . In his whiskey distilling business, he was
paid in gold and had accumulated quite a
bit by the time of the Civil War. He was
fearful that some renegades or outlaws (like Coot Ray's Gang) might come by and
rob him so he made a poke sack of heavy duck cloth which was larger than a
gallon bucket; filled it with his gold; brought it from his house to the
Nottley River just east of the Daniel England's house and threw it across the
River for Daniel to keep for the duration of the War. He felt his
brother-in-law Daniel, was the only one he could trust.

General Notes: Served as a Page
in the Ga. Legislature for cousin Francis J. "Bud" COLLINS.
Ivan Thomas went to Hiawasse,
Georgia where he attended the school variously called the Hiawassee Institute
and/or the Hiawassee College. It had been founded by the two noted Baptist
ministers, cousins, Dr. George W. Truett and Dr. Fernando Coello McConnell on
land given by the McConnell family. Several young men from Choestoe attended
the Hiawassee Academy. They would rent a cabin, "batch," or do their
own cooking and housework, and attend classes. Their being able to attend this
school represented a sacrifice on the part of their parents to provide the
money for tuition and books, and to rent a place for their children to live,
even as low as higher education costs were in those days.
Following his graduation from
Hiawassee Academy, Ivan Thomas Collins then went to Mercer University in Macon,
Georgia. It seemed a natural choice in his next step in education, for other
boys from Choestoe, like Tom's cousin, Mauney Douglas Collins, who later served
for twenty-five years as Georgia's State School Superintendent, and his friend
and distant cousin, Norman Vester Dyer, who also became a noted educator in
Georgia, attended Mercer University.
On October 8, 1916, Ivan Thomas
Collins married Martha Estelle Tucker of Centerville, Georgia. Her parents were
John T. and Jesse Reynolds Tucker. By the time of their marriage, Tom was in
his chosen career of banking. After graduating from Mercer, he took graduate
courses in business administration, banking, accounting, and commercial law. He
was named to a national post, that of Comptroller of the Currency. His job took
him into most of the states of the union where he was what we might commonly
call a "bank inspector."
After his stint as Comptroller of
Currency, Thomas Ivan Collins became president of a bank in Athens, Tennessee
where he spent ten years before his semi-retirement due to heart difficulties
in 1952. He returned to the county of his birth, Union, where he and his
beloved wife, Estelle, lived until their deaths.

General Notes: Standing tall like
the hills
A tribute to Cecil Woodrow
Collins
By Ethelene Dyer Jones (Union
Sentinal, 7-6-2006)
"God, give me hills to
climb,
And strength for climbing!"
These words ending Arthur
Guiterman's poem, Hills could well describe the life and work of the late Cecil
Woodrow Collins who went out from the hills of Union County and became a
productive and useful citizen. But with him, throughout his life was a love for
the hills of home and the symbolism they represented in challenge and
achievement.
Cecil Woodrow Collins died April
22, 2006 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center at age 92. In between his birth on
September 26, 1913 in Union County, Ga., and his death, he had packed a lot of
living and climbed hills not a few.
He was the first-born of six
children, three sons and three daughters, of Francis Thurman Collins (known as
Bob T.) and Mary Viola (Collins) Collins. With both his father and mother born
into the Collins lineage, Cecil's family roots go back to the first Collins
settler in the county, Thompson Collins and his wife Celia Collins Self, and
their children.
In Cecil's paternal line were his
grand parents, Thompson ("Thomp") Smith Collins and Susan
("Susie") Jane Cook Collins; his great grand parents, Francis
("Frank") and Rutha Nix Collins: and his great, great grand parents,
early settlers Thompson Collins and Celia Self Collins.
In Cecil's maternal line were his
grandparents James ("Jim") Johnson Collins and Margaret A. Nix
Collins; his great grand parents, Ivan Kimsey Collins and Martha J. Hunter
Collins; and his great, great grandparents, Thompson and Celia Self Collins.
Back when Bob T. Collins courted
and married Mary Viola Collins, tracing of family roots was not as popular as
it became later in the twentieth century. Cecil's parents had the same last name.
Sure, they both went back to the earliest settler, Thompson Collins. Of
"good mountain stock," these "distant" cousins reared six
children of excellent character, intelligence and integrity: Cecil, Hazel, Jim,
Neal, Mary Catherine and Betty Jane. Of his siblings, one, Jim, preceded Cecil
in death.
Cecil was educated at the
oneand/or two-teacher school at Choestoe, and graduated from Blairsville High
School in 1931. He then attended Young
Harris College during some of the
worst years of the Great Depression, graduating in 1933. After college, he
secured a job with the newly-organized Civilian Conservation Corps as clerk.
The CCC was a boon for country boys seeking employment, and was founded by
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help alleviate the job situation in
depressed times.
Then came World War II. Cecil
Woodrow Collins enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where he served as a
"90-Day Wonder" Lieutenant JG officer. His two brothers also served
in World War II: James Thompson Collins in the U. S. Navy and Robert Neal
Collins in the Army Air Force. Cecil was on active duty in the Coast Guard
through the end of the war in 1945, and continued as a reserve officer until
his discharge in 1955.
In 1946 Cecil Collins began a
45-year career with the Social Security Administration (SSA), serving first as
a field representative in the claims department. It was while he was working in
Meridian. Mississippi that he met Miss Mamie Lorena Camp. They married December
9, 1951. Two sons were born to the couple, Glenn Camp Collins in 1953 and Andy
Thomas Collins in 1956. The boys were born when the couple lived at Athens, Ga.
Cecil Collins proved that he was
ready to "climb mountains" in his work in the Social Security
Administration. He served for more than 20 years as branch manager in the
office at Gainesville.
In Gainesville Cecil could look
northward toward the mountains that called him home frequently. He took Glenn
and Andy hunting, fishing and hiking in the hills of Choestoe. In the family's
location in the burgeoning city of Gainesville, they had the best of two
worlds-city life and its opportunity and proximity to the mountains and the
great out-of-doors.
Active in First Baptist Church,
Gainesville, and a deacon and teacher, Cecil's quiet leadership and commonsense
wisdom lent much to the work and growth of the church. In community affairs, he
was a member of the Lions Club and executive director of the Community Chest
which later was named United Way. Lorena likewise was active in church and
community and was a long-time volunteer at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
His funeral was conducted at the
church he loved, First Baptist, Gainesville, on April 24, 2006, with his
pastor, Dr. Bill Coates, and retired pastor, Dr. John Lee Taylor, and Bruce
Fields remembering characteristics of this mountain main who, as Guiterman
expressed in his poem, found "hills to climb" throughout his life and
went all the way to the top of them. His body was taken back to the "hills
of home," and interred at Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.
Cecil married Mamie Lorane
Camp [21321] [MRIN: 7604] on 9 Dec 1951 in
Meridian. , Ms.5 Mamie was born on
28 Nov 1916. They had two children: Glenn Camp and Andy Thomas.
Glenn Camp Collins [21322]5 was born in 1953 in Athens, Clarke Co, GA.
Andy Thomas Collins [21323]5 was born in 1956 in Athens, Clarke Co, GA.
Susie Hazel Collins [21966] was born on 27 Jul 1915.
Noted events in her life were:
•
She had a residence in 2007 in Blairsville, Union Co., GA.
Susie married Ronald Ward
Clary [21967] [MRIN: 7856]. Ronald was born on
20 Aug 1911 and died on an unknown date.
James Thompson Collins [21968] was born on 21 Nov 1919 and died
before 2007.
James married Mildred Sullivan
[21969] [MRIN: 7857].
Robert Neal Collins Sr [21952] was born on 17 Mar 1921 in ,
Union Co, GA, died on 14 Mar 2007 in Blairsville City Cemetery, Blairsville,
Union Co, GA at age 85, and was buried in Choestoe Cem #2, Union Co., GA.
General Notes: A Memorial Day
Tribute to Major Robert Neal Collins Sr.
By Ethelene Dyer-Jones, Union
Setninel, May 24, 2007
Young Robert Neal Collins served
as a gunner in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He would proceed to
the rank of Major and become a pilot as he spent a total of 27 years in the US
Air Force Reserves.
How many times Major Robert Neal
Collins, Sr. (1921- 2007), US Air Force Veteran of World War II, the Korean
War, the Vietnamese War, flight instructor, lover of flying, read or quoted
"High Flight" by John Gillespie McGee, Jr., I know not. But the poem
so characterizes Mr. Collins that I reproduce it here in his memory and for our
consideration as we observe Memorial Day, 2007.
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly
bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on
laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined
the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds- and done a
hundred things
You have not dreamed of- Wheeled
and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.
Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind
along, and flung
My eager craft through footless
halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious
burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights
with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle
flew.
And, while with silent, lifting
mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of
space,
Put out my hand, and touched the
face of God.
-John Gillespie McGee, Jr.
(1922-1941)
Major Robert Neal Collins, Sr.
experienced the same lofty thoughts the young Americanborn British fighter
pilot so aptly expressed in his sonnet. The young McGee, at age 19, was killed
December 11, 1941 in a training flight as his plane from the Spitfire Squadron
fell near Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England. The young pilot wrote the poem on
the back of a letter sent to his parents. He noted: "I am enclosing a
verse I wrote the other day. It started at 30,000 feet, and was finished soon
after I landed." His parents shared the poem with the world, and it has
inspired countless thousands.
On March 14, 2007, three days shy
of his eighty-sixth birthday, R. Neal Collins "slipped the surly bonds of
earth." It was not in a plane this time for the flyer, soaring high above
the clouds, but God came down, touched the hand of His servant, and said,
"Come away with me. This time, I am taking you where you will experience
flight and freedom as you've never seen before. He truly "touched the face
of God."
When I heard of R. Neal's
passing, I thought back to the beginning of World War II. Three men, born the
same year, 1921, on the same Collins Road in Choestoe, joined the U. S. Army
Air Force. One was Robert Neal Collins (a cousin), one was William Clyde
Collins (my double-first cousin), and one was Francis Eugene Dyer (my brother).
At Choestoe Church where the
three young men were members, we kept them in our prayers throughout the war, praying
for their safety and return. They were on the list of many others from our
community who followed their patriotic leanings and were willing to give all
for our country. All three sons of Francis Thurman "Bob" Collins and
Mary Viola Collins (she had died in 1937 before World War II began) served
during World War II. Cecil W. Collins was in the U. S. Coast Guard; James
Thompson Collins was in the U. S. Navy; and Robert Neal Collins was in the U.
S. Air Force. All three of the Collins brothers and their cousins, Clyde
Collins and Eugene Dyer, returned as decorated heroes from the conflict. The
community and their relatives felt pride in their noble service.
Following World War II, Robert
Neal Collins, Sr. resumed his life, but kept his ties to the U. S. Air Force by
serving in the Reserves. For twenty-seven years he served his country, retiring
in 1970 with the rank of major. During the Vietnam Conflict, he was activated
and spent sixteen months with Airlift 445 at Dobbins Air Force Base, flying to
England and Vietnam. As a certified flight instructor, he taught many in the
North Georgia area how to fly.
He was a noted teacher. In 1954
he received the Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and
in 1964 the Master of Science degree from George Peabody College. He taught
mathematics at Union County High School, his alma mater, and in night classes
at Young Harris College. Known for his wry wit and humor, he had the ability to
make his classroom one of ease, yet of strong purpose. Many former students
rise up and call him blessed.
On October 19, 1951, he married
beautiful Ruby Rogers, daughter of Thomas Franklin and Jessie Teague Rogers. To
Neal and Ruby were born three children: Robert Neal, Jr. on November 18, 1953;
Rhenee on January 2, 1955; and Joseph R., born June 15, 1961. Family was
important to this couple. They reared their children and cherished their
grandchildren as they arrived. At the time of Neal's death on March 14, 2007,
they had six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Ruby and Neal celebrated
their fiftieth wedding anniversary in October, 2001. Relatives and friends
expressed the love and admiration they felt for this couple.
Church and a right relationship
with the Lord were important to Robert Neal Collins, Sr. He was a Sunday
Schoolteacher, director of the Sunday School for years, and a long-time
ordained deacon of Choestoe Baptist Church where he grew up. His steady
influence and eye for fair administration led the church through years of
growth, then through reversals to renewed growth and redirection. Neal sought
the leadership of God and led others to depend on Him. Family has suggested
that memorial donations may be made to the Choestoe Church Building Fund for
the church's newFamily Life Center that Neal helped to engineer.
I hope you re-read the lines of
"High Flight." Major Robert Neal Collins had the lofty experiences so
aptly penned by John Gillespie McGee, Jr. In addition, R. Neal had the
experience of seeing insight blossom on the faces of students as he taught them
and they responded to his instruction. Whether he was guiding an eager student
in the intricacies of flight or opening up the secrets of mathematics to a high
school or college student, he was himself both learner and teacher. As Henry
Adams stated: "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his
influence stops." We remember you gratefully, Major Robert Neal Collins,
Jr.

CIVIL AIR PATROL
BLAIRSVILLE, GA
The Civil Ar Patrol was formed during
WWII. The members were paid very little
and the flyers furnished their own airplanes.
One of the missions was a coastal patrol as a deterrent to German subs
hitting ships along our Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina coast. Our own Mr. Roscoe Collins was involved in
this mission.

General Notes: Dr. S. Vanus
Hunter, dentist
By ETHELENE DYER-JONES
Union Sentenal Feb. 22, 2006
Ethelene Dyer-Jones
From Union County have gone out
some outstanding citizens to make a difference in places they chose to live and
work outside these mountains and valleys. Such a person was Dr. S. Vanus
Hunter, Dentist, who spent twenty-seven years of his years of practice in
Commerce,Georgia.
S. Vanus Hunter was born
September 14, 1890 in Union County, Choestoe District. His parents were William
"Bill" Hunter (1871-1894) and Martha Ann "Mat" Jackson
Hunter (1866- 1916). Both his parents were descendants of early settlers.
Bill Hunter's parents were John
A. Hunter (1844-1913) and Elizabeth Collins Hunter (1844- 1924). Through her
lineage, Vanus' grandmother Elizabeth was a daughter of Francis Collins, known
as Frank (1816- 1864) and Rutha Nix Collins (1822-1893), and his great
grandparents were Thompson Collins (1785-1858) and Celia Self Collins
(1787-1880), first Celia
Collins settlers in Union County.
S. Vanus Hunter's mother, Martha
Ann "Mat" Jackson was the fifth of eight children born to William
Marion Jackson (1829-1912) and Rebecca Jane Goforth Jackson (1833- 1901) who
lived in the Old Liberty section of Choestoe District, Union County. During the
Civil War, Vanus's Grandfather Jackson served in the Union Army from December,
1863 through July, 1865. His service was in Tennessee and North Carolina.
When S. Vanus Hunter's father
died in 1894, Vanus was only four years old. He lived most of his growing up
years with his grandfather, William Marion Jackson. Vanus's mother married
again to John Pruitt Collins following her first husband's death. From his
Grandfather Jackson he learned a strong work ethic and a love for education. He
was educated in the local one-room schools of Choestoe and New Liberty, and
probably (though not proven) received his high school diploma either at
Blairsville Collegiate Institute or Hiawassee Academy. While going to school,
he worked on his grandfather's farm and did odd jobs to earn money.
On September 27, 1914, Vanus
married beautiful Lannie R. Miller (1894-?), daughter of Jane Malinda Collins
(1861-1931) and William J. "Bud" Miller (1849-1919).
Lannie Miller was a sister to
Stephen Grady Miller (1891-1932), father of the Honorable Zell Miller, Governor
of Georgia and US Senator. Lannie and Vanus were related through their Collins
lineage. Her mother, Jane Malinda Collins Miller, was a daughter of Francis
"Frank" Collins and Rutha Nix Collins.
After their marriage, the couple
moved to Atlanta. Vanus got work first on the railroad and then in the post
office. While still a clerk at the post office, he enrolled in Southern Dental
College in Atlanta and graduated in 1917.
He opened his dental office and
practice for awhile before the couple decided to move to C o m m e r c e , G e
o rg i a . Maybe the lure of that northeast Georgia town was the railroad track
which cuts through the middle of Commerce. His dental office where he practiced
for twenty-seven years was near the railroad track.
Vanus and Lannie Miller Hunter
did not have children of their own. Each had a compassionate heart. Vanus was
active in First Baptist Church, Commerce, where he served as the Men's Bible
Teacher for years. He served in civic organizations, helped to organize the
Commerce Kiwanis Club, was active in the Georgia Dental Association and was a
member of the Commerce Board of Education and the Commerce Building and Loan
Association.
Dr. Vanus Hunter died August 26,
1970 and was interred in the Gray Hill Cemetery, Commerce. When his wife Lannie
died several years later, she was buried beside her husband.
From a rocky childhood on a
hard-scrabble farm, Vanus Hunter went out from Union County to make a
difference in Jackson County, Georgia.

DORA SPIVA EDUVSTION PROGRAM
LAUNCHED AT TRUETT-MCCONNELL COLLEGE
Truett-McConnell College,
Cleveland, Ga., has launched its newly-approved bachelor's degree program in
early childhood educattion and has named it to honor a highly respected
educator in Northeast Georgia, Dora Spiva of Blairsville, Ga.
Approval for the startup of the
degree program came on December 6, 2005, from the Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of the Colleges and Schools. Initially the Bachelor of Science in
Education in Education degree program will enroll students who intend to major
in early childhood education and provide professional preparation for teachers
in grades P-5. In time the education
degree program will be expanded to train teachers at other levels as well.
A
Steering Committee to receive funds for the initiation of the degree
program has been appointed consisiting of Mrs. Ethelene Dyer Jones, a TMC
alumna and retired educator.; Rev. Troy Acree, retired pastor and Director of
Missions for the Georgia Baptist Convention's Mountain Area Mission Program;
Rev. Doug Merck, current Director of Missions for teh Mountain Area Mission
Program; Mr. Clyde Colllins, former Union County School Superintendent; Mrs.
Janet Hill, Blairsville resident and former officer of the Georgia Women's
Missionary Union; Hon. charles Jenkins, representative in the Georgia General
Assembly from Blairsville; and Rev. Charles Stilwell, current pastor of
Choestoe Baptist Church.
The Dora Spiva Education Program
at Truett-McConnell College is named to honor the unique contributiions of Mrs.
Dora Hunter Allison Spiva to education and to Christian causes in North
Georgia. Her years as an educatior in Union County entriched the lived of many
students and colleagues, and her lifelong involvement in Choestoe Baptist
Church and other Baptist agencies speaks volumes about her commitment.
Dora Spiva, who will turn 101
years old on Febuary 10, 2006, has the alertness, attractiveness, and energy of
one much younger. With roots deep in
Union County's history, Dora Hutner grew up in the Choestoe community in a
family that treasured education. She
attended the Colligiate Institute of Blairsville and taught at the Institute
upon graduation.
In 1929 the institute became a
public high school, and Miss Dora Hunter was employed as one of the first
eachers in the newly formed Union County High School. She continued a long career of teaching
mathematics in the high school, retiring in May 1970 after 40 years as a
teacher. along the way, she touched and
influenced the lived of countless young people.
The contributions of Mrs Spiva to
her church and other Baptist agencies are noteworthy. She has served in the Woman's Missionary
Union of Choestoe Baptist Church for more than 75 years and continues to attend
state and national WMU meetings. She
taught Sunday School for many years and has served in various offices of the
Notla River Baptist Association.
Her relationship to
Truett-McConnell College dates to the school's founding in 1947, when the
Choestoe Baptist Church lent it first support to the fledgling Georgia Baptist
College. In fact, the church's pastor,
Rev. Claud C. Boynton, served as one of the college's founders and first
truestees.
Now, with the launching of the
Dora Spiva Ecucation Program to train teachers at Truett-mcDonnell College, the
influence of the unique and gifted Dora Hunter allison Spiva will be passed
down from one generation to teachers to the next as the decades roll by.
Aunt Dora will live on-in memory
and legend
With love from Ethelene Dyer
Jones One of her students
All of us who have known and
loved Aunt Dora Hunter Allison Spiva for so long were saddened at her passing
on Tuesday, February 24, at the marvelous age of 104 and 14 days. She was able
to live at her home until Friday, February, 20, when her final illness required
hospitalization. We mourn, not for her, but for ourselves at her departure from
our midst. We can but rejoice that she is now enjoying the joys of heaven which
she anticipated after a life well-lived and entrusted to the Lord Christ.
She leaves behind the influence
of her forty years of teaching on students too numerous to number, and the
example of a life lived with joy, purpose and service. For her influence on so
many, we are eternally grateful. She said to me, a motherless girl of fourteen,
"You can do anything you set your mind to do." I found her advice
worthy of following. Many could give a similar testimony to mine on the
influence she had upon them in school and beyond as she "kept up with her
own" and loved and encouraged us.
Memories flood our minds as we
think of the happy occasions we have spent with her. I have set on her porch at
her home in Choestoe and admired her flower gardens, as lush and bountiful as
any horticulturist could produce. I have thought often of how her life was like
an unfolding flower, lifting thoughts like petals to sunshine in the early
morning as she sought the Lord's guidance for the day. She was a mainstay at
our wonderful Class of 1947 Reunions, and this could be said of any class she
nourished at Union County High School. She was the eldest present at our Dyer-
Souther Reunions each year after Cousin Watson Dyer died, himself reaching
nearly 104, until this past July when she was not able to attend. She loved
family and encouraged me to record and publish the history of our noble
ancestors. "Salt of the earth," she would often say of them, being
hesitant to own up to the fact that she, too, was of that salt that had not
lost its savor, even to the ripe age of 104.
Now she is a legend in our time.
Each time we think of her it will be with gratitude. As recently as October,
she was part of a documentary film which will open the Byron Herbert Reece
Center. Our poet/novelist was one of her students and she spoke lovingly about
his time in her classes. Aunt Dora was honored by Truett McConnell College
through having the four-year School of Education named in her honor. The first
graduates from the school finished in May, 2008, and are now somewhere in
schools beginning careers that will honor the name of this master teacher. It
is one of my aims to continue raising funds to complete the endowment and
scholarships for the Dora Hunter Allison Spiva School of Education. It is one
way I can say "thank you" to Aunt Dora for inspiring me to become a
teacher. Anyone wishing to donate in her memory may send contributions to
Truett McConnell College, 100 Alumni Drive, Cleveland, GA 30529.
My prediction is that she will
remain alive in the hearts and minds of those who loved and admired her, continuing
to wield her positive influence, eliciting sweet memories of many associations
with her; indeed, a legend in our time.
