Joseph Garrett (1822 - 1900). Joseph Garrett, son of Joseph and Sarah Stroud Garrett, was born in North
Carolina, and died in Fannin County, Georgia.
At age 26, 28 October 1848, in Gilmer County, Georgia, 24 year old

Fannin County, Georgia. Joseph lived
77 years and Nancy lived 97. They are
both buried in the Garrett family cemetery in Fannin County.
Joseph was a farmer and had a gold mind on his
property. Some believed that he was
secretly wealthy with hidden gold.
From the
GILMER COUNTY, GEORGIA, HERITAGE BOOK:
... Joseph Garrett married Nancy Mashburn and owned
a large farm on Newport Road. He was a very wealthy man and owned two gold
mines on his property on Rall Mountain.
Even today, you are able to look down into 20 feet shafts, where gold
was mined.
It also
has been handed down that his wealth was left to his descendants and in-laws
who squandered it away.
Sometime
before he died he went up on a hill above his house and was gone for long
while. When he returned he told his wife
Nancy that he had found a beautiful place for a family cemetery. Becky was his maiden daughter and was cook
and housekeeper. She was setting up a
new bed in one of the upstairs rooms when Joseph came in. He told her that he didn't think that was a
good place for the bed. She turned to
him only in time to see him falling. He
died instantly with a heart-attack. He
was buried on the hill under the tree he had sat under and cracked walnuts on
the day he found the cemetery spot. It
has become now become a large cemetery for family and friends.
